I wanted Mcain to win.
McCain's policies and moral positions are more in line with mine.
Oh well, I shall not be celebrating Obama's success, but will sit back and see if he survives til his inauguration in January.
It will be an interesting next few years, that's for sure.

I dont think Obama is totally a bad thing to be the next president. Far from it. Let's face it, within Obama's own lifetime black people were not even allowed to vote. I am for that reason glad to see him win this time round.
Note the 'big' states that the Republicans win time and time again and now was no exception were the likes of Alabama, Georgia etc. Shows to me that some parts of America still hasnt crawled out of the dark ages with their archaic "white is better" mentality....you only have to ask yourself Why hasnt there been any black people making any real attempt to become president before now? Because america wasnt ready for it, they wouldnt stand a chance. Til now.
Most prisoners on death row are black young men. If you are poor and black, you dont get a decent lawyer or even a fair trial, this is proven fact.
Now that Obama can give a voice to alot of people who up til now have had lip service paid to them, I hope things will change for the better for the people of america.

I don't really listen to their policies - what they say and what they do (or are able to do) are usually two separate things.
I'm happy Obama is in |
Obama has already said one thing then voted the other way on several issues, citing some daft miniscule wording or not wanting to upset anyone...whereas McCain votes with his heart and isnt afraid of being unpopular with his opinion.
As to 'policies' that Obama has promised "if I am elected, I will....." only time will tell if he follows through.
Iran and Iraq, and American grown food and oil being 4 issues for starters.
New brooms sweep clean and all that. Let's hope so.
I am just sad that his gran died just before she could see him win. My heart goes out to him, it must be really tough to keep smiling and be happy right now.

I said exactly that to my dad, Carrie.
He said that we mustnt forget that within Obama's lifetime black people werent even allowed to vote, when McCain got into politics it was a "whites only" profession....black people have every right to still feel a tad pissed off and vote with their conscience, be they whatever color themselves.
See what I wrote above about prisons - same goes for schooling, health care etc. If you are poor and black (in fact simply non-white, mainly including Hispanic) you have a MUCH greater chance of being forgotten and neglected in all areas of American society.
The wheels of change have been very slow moving forward over the last 40 yrs or so.
Hopefully now, Obama's voice will oil those cogs and get things moving much faster now.
I still agree with you about enciting racism by making a big thing about his color, thats why I reckon he'll be assassinated before long.

Erm...Obama ain't black. Hes mixed race.
He was born in Hawaii to a white mother and Kenyan (I think) father. Same with Halle Berry (white mother), Lewis Hamilton (white mother) and Tiger Woods (Thai mother). As mixed race is the UK's fastest growing ethnic group (source: 2001 census), I think we should recognise this even if the Yanks don't. |
The Americans tend to say "Black" when they sometimes mean not 100% caucasian.
I do think they recognise the difference, its just simpler than keeping on saying "mixed race", "hispanic", or whatever.
The term "black" seems to be more socially acceptable these days among the PC brigade in the states than "Afro-American".

Trilby, I think?
A top hat is taller and flat on the top. (and rounded).

Tired or not bbones, I guess thats what i was saying in my ignorant fashion.
T'is why I wouldnt rule out assassination because there are still those in america (and elsewhere) who dont want to move with the times and it will hurt their pride to be governed by a non-white, whether they openly admit it or not.
That's why mccain took the likes of georgia, alabama etc.
Although like i said before, i personally prefer mccain's stand on moral issues I am actually pleased for the american people, and the world in fact, that obama got in.
The day whites and non-whites are *truly* equal in america and the rest of the world, Obama could have green skin with orange dots for all it will matter.
Til then, martin luther king must surely be rejoicing up there.

Well I seem to remember certain men having something to say about Margaret Thatcher when she came into power here.

hell if a duck had been voted president i'd have been happy as long as we didn't have palin, a creationist who doesn't read newpapers, in the second highest position of power in the most powerful country in the world, behind a 70-somthing year old cancer survivor |
What's wrong with being a creationist, and whats wrong with being a cancer survivor?
I dont see how either should preclude them from winning that election?

Depends on what media you use/listen to/read.
CNN, BBC 24 world news on tv and bbc radio world service have been very informative and unbiased throughout.

Usually all the scandal/crap ones to be honest Alice
All i want to hear today is Obama won because he stood for this policy or he stood for that policy....that's all. And I seem to have missed that today |
I would hazard a guess and say his promises re Iraq and education then.
And defo what his position in power can do to help other non-whites of america.
The fact that he is not 100% caucasian (to keep Baggie happy ) affects how the people view and interpret some of his policies, the two - policies and color of skin - are entwined nonetheless in some issues.
But I'm not American, but if I was I would have voted for McCain just for his position on abortion alone.
Or maybe I would have voted for Obama in honor of Martin luther king....I dunno, who knows? I'm not american, so it isnt for me to say really.

"like some kind of sodding disney movie"
I expect Steven Spielburg is working on that as I type!
Actually, he could get Stephen King to write the storyline, a la Pollyanna Meets Annie Wilkes, and McCain's ghost has to come back and save her....
