Excellent news that Obama won but due to timezone differences I never had the chance to party in the street. I was pushing up "the big Zs" instead.
Does anyone know of any national chain of pubs that are planning retrospective celebrations tonight?
Unfortunately Reading doesn't have a American-themed pub were I can revel wildly, albeit a bit belatedly ...

I wanted Mcain to win.
McCain's policies and moral positions are more in line with mine.
Oh well, I shall not be celebrating Obama's success, but will sit back and see if he survives til his inauguration in January.
It will be an interesting next few years, that's for sure.

I don't really listen to their policies - what they say and what they do (or are able to do) are usually two separate things.
I'm happy Obama is in

I dont think Obama is totally a bad thing to be the next president. Far from it. Let's face it, within Obama's own lifetime black people were not even allowed to vote. I am for that reason glad to see him win this time round.
Note the 'big' states that the Republicans win time and time again and now was no exception were the likes of Alabama, Georgia etc. Shows to me that some parts of America still hasnt crawled out of the dark ages with their archaic "white is better" mentality....you only have to ask yourself Why hasnt there been any black people making any real attempt to become president before now? Because america wasnt ready for it, they wouldnt stand a chance. Til now.
Most prisoners on death row are black young men. If you are poor and black, you dont get a decent lawyer or even a fair trial, this is proven fact.
Now that Obama can give a voice to alot of people who up til now have had lip service paid to them, I hope things will change for the better for the people of america.

Oops, I forgot to vote.
Oh, it wasn't in this country? Then why is it the only thing on the news then?
Besides, hes still a politician.

Obama has already said one thing then voted the other way on several issues, citing some daft miniscule wording or not wanting to upset anyone...whereas McCain votes with his heart and isnt afraid of being unpopular with his opinion.
As to 'policies' that Obama has promised "if I am elected, I will....." only time will tell if he follows through.
Iran and Iraq, and American grown food and oil being 4 issues for starters.
New brooms sweep clean and all that. Let's hope so.
I am just sad that his gran died just before she could see him win. My heart goes out to him, it must be really tough to keep smiling and be happy right now.

Eight years of America with George Bush II as the US president has been a disaster for the world and the UK too, in my humble opinion.
Obama was quite simply the best candidate we could reasonably have hoped to emerge from such a desolated America.
The excitement that was clearly visible there strongly reminded me of the 1997 landslide victory.
I really expected the worst from the American right-wing and I was very glad that Obama survived to enjoy the electoral victory that he deserved.

Well said Andrew but in saying that, I've got to vote in this tomorrow:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7710559.stm
Who to choose, who to choose.......My constituency is the one right next door to Gordon Brown's so there is a strong labour stronghold but I don't think there will be for much longer.
Personally I couldnt really give a monkeys about the American election, probably cos I have taken no interest in it. I don't know what each candidate stood for and I don't know what effect they will have on Britain so I can't comment. All I know is, I still don't understand their election system!!!

Gold star to the women in the top hat

Think she would have been a better choice if he'd been facing Hilary rather than Obama, still a crap choice but better.
And that's not a top hat
05.11.2008, 21:30 quote
The more I think about it...I'm a little confused....they keep going on about it being a victory for the black race etc. Aint the fact that so much of a fuss is being made of it actually encouraging racism etc to continue?? Well maybe not encourage as much, thats probably a bit strong....but I can't think how else to put it. Why not concentrate more on the fact that he would or would not be a better president than the fact that he is black? Yes i get the relation to the Martin Luther King time and that but it's in the past and has changed so why keep going on about it? Barack Obama didnt change it did he? Yeah just cynical old me probably.....
05.11.2008, 21:35 quote
Erm...Obama ain't black. Hes mixed race.
He was born in Hawaii to a white mother and Kenyan (I think) father.
Same with Halle Berry (white mother), Lewis Hamilton (white mother) and Tiger Woods (Thai mother).
As mixed race is the UK's fastest growing ethnic group (source: 2001 census), I think we should recognise this even if the Yanks don't.
