28.06.2006, 10:33 quote
just wondering what all the uk and NI members think about the smoking ban coming in...?
as i live in the republic its been in ages so you dont really notice that you're freezing your tits off outside the door in the rain and the snow and the sleet... but i tell you this.. you do notice when you wake up witha flu the next day. the streets are littered with butts and there are more ppl outside smoking than there is inside drinking lol.
but i do hafta say the pubs are a much better environment now. im a heavy smoker (20 a day) and even my eyes sometimes watered and i had to leave the pub for some air.
the perfect solution of course is to build specially designed smoking huts with patio heaters as even in summer in ireland and england its blooooody cold.
but most landlords dont see it that way... they provide shelter from the rain by putting a roof out the back.... but still... cold.
( i am also a believer in building a pub witha cresche attached at the back!!) lmfao

I think the smoking ban is an excellent idea.
People who think it's breaching their human rights are entitled to their opinion, but it's going to stay just that - their opinion.
It's inconceivable how people can say there's no proof that second-hand smoke causes damage to bystanders, and hopefully this ban will put an end to the ridiculous amounts of sore-throats I get after visiting particularly smokey pubs.
29.06.2006, 12:31 quote
Why should people be told where they can and can't smoke?
It's stupid.
Fair enough, banning smoking in pubs. But again, in most pubs, you find that there are non-smoking areas already. If you don't want to be near smokers, don't freakin' sit near them.
You know which people piss me off? The ones who choose to stand or sit right next to somebody that has already lit a cigarette, and then they start coughing. They chose to sit there, so don't whine about it.
Sorry..rant over
29.06.2006, 12:37 quote
The only time I really cant stand smoking is when I'm eating. I hate smelling of it after a night out too.
However if you choose to smoke thats up to you, I aint bothered.
29.06.2006, 14:54 quote
oh i just knew this thread would cause some debate lmfaooo **evil grin**
yeah im not a great fan of the ban and i been livin with it already.
29.06.2006, 16:27 quote
I don't think there should be a ban where you can't smoke in pubs - The majority of people smoke while having a drink.
Imagine it...20 people go out of the pub at the same time to have a cigarette. It's stupid.
I don't even smoke(anymore) and I think it's stupid.
29.06.2006, 17:58 quote
Actually, I see it as absolutely positive. Well, for me, anyway.
I don't smoke and I do easily get respiratory problems in areas with too much smoke. And as I wear contacts, it normally took about 1 hour in a smokey pub to make my eyes water and sting like hell. So now, I can stay at a pub longer than I could before.
And I don't smell like an ashtray the next day. I simply hate the smell of it in my clothes and hair.
And after the smoking ban was put in action in Ireland, many pubs have started to put up tables outside, something which I (being from Germany originally) have really really missed here before.
Don't get me wrong here, I don't mind smokers as such. I don't have a problem with people smoking normally. But I did have a problem with a large number of people smoking for several hours in a confined, ill-ventilated space like a pub...

I find it interesting how people bring in "human rights" into the equation.
Seriously.... go to a maternity ward and see all the mums who are 8 months pregnant and stood outside smoking 20 a day..... human rights..... i believe I have the RIGHT to clean air.. in fact thee are laws to safe guard that.
If people want to smoke.. thats fine.. and if they didnt exhale their toxins then i would have no objection standing next to them.. but they do.... having recently been to scotland its such a different atmosphere (boom boom).... and you'll find one more thing... even if you have had a couple to drink... you have SO MUCH MORE of a clear head and can think of what your doing.... rather than having alcohol and a decrease in oxygen levels
Its interesting at why there is a link between smoking and drinking, why should two drugs be linked so closely? We need to be doing more to curb use of a drug thats more addictive than heroine
Roll on next summer in England!!!

Im in a mixed mind about the ban! i meen i smoke and go to pubs every weekend and i do smoke alot while drinking and i wont go in to a non smoking pub for that reason! but again i think people that dont smoke have the right to clean air, mayb there should be smoking pubs and non smoking pubs but i think thats a lil bit of a silly idea because then its spliting people up.
22.07.2006, 14:18 quote
would it be fair of me to say in a pub, excuse me sir/madam would you mind awfully if I p!ss all over your clothes, as you have made mine smell of cigarette smoke.
Now some might say well don't go in the pub in the first place, why not, I want a drink with my good wife (or whoever), IMO I think it's only fair.
I'll prolly get some hammer for this, but my shoulders are broad (but please be careful as they are not strong
)
29.07.2006, 22:12 quote
im kind of for the ban, i think all pubs should have smoking and non smoking areas, then it would keep allppl happy. most pubs have one or more rooms, or at least different areas, it would b so easy 2 split it off. all restaurants should b none smoking though, im a smoker, but eating and smoking is just nasty.
29.07.2006, 22:39 quote
having a no smoking zone in a pub is like having a no pissing zone in a swimming pool... no matter where you sit your still gonna be affected by it.
as for the ban, im all for it... and its not cos ive just quit smoking (even tho i am gagging for one).. its cos when i go out, i stink of smoke and the amount of times some twat has stubbed a fag on me is annoying. being a smoker i used to piss me off how smoky pubs where so i never hardly used to smoke when i was out.. didnt need to as ive already ingested enough.
but think of it in a good point, how many times have you been shit faced and then gone outside and its really hit you, if you smoke outside it would hit you sooner and hopefully sober you up enough to stop you doing anything you might regret in the morning
25.08.2006, 04:44 quote
Just to stir things up... it's about bloody time too!! Where was my right to be free of all that crap?!! It's a disgusting filthy habit and smokers should be made to eat their stubs!!! lol... only kidding.
I never had a problem with other people smoking til I developed asthma 2 years ago. I have it bad enough for it to stop me from going out anywhere there was a chance of inhaling even the tiniest bit of smoke. Now I'm back out in the world. ok, so it's only once every 4/6 weeks, but at least I now have the choice.
27.08.2006, 16:50 quote
Just back from Scotland I loved pubs no smoke felt sorry smokers outside but hay my health too!
01.09.2006, 19:20 quote
was at a club last weekend, when i come out of there bout 3am i had pretty much almost lost my voice! id say that was pretty much from smoke inhalation, was in there for about 6 hours so probably inhaled the equivalent of about 200 cigarettes. had a painful swollen throat for a while after, i had to ask myself why do i do this, im getting too old for it all, but if nobody smoked in there im pretty sure i wouldnt get that. id support any smoking ban in pubs and clubs, i really dont wanna have to inhale all that just for a night out.
