just wondering what all the uk and NI members think about the smoking ban coming in...?

as i live in the republic its been in ages so you dont really notice that you're freezing your tits off outside the door in the rain and the snow and the sleet... but i tell you this.. you do notice when you wake up witha flu the next day. the streets are littered with butts and there are more ppl outside smoking than there is inside drinking lol.

but i do hafta say the pubs are a much better environment now. im a heavy smoker (20 a day) and even my eyes sometimes watered and i had to leave the pub for some air.

the perfect solution of course is to build specially designed smoking huts with patio heaters as even in summer in ireland and england its blooooody cold. Very Happy but most landlords dont see it that way... they provide shelter from the rain by putting a roof out the back.... but still... cold.

( i am also a believer in building a pub witha cresche attached at the back!!) lmfao

I think the smoking ban is an excellent idea.

People who think it's breaching their human rights are entitled to their opinion, but it's going to stay just that - their opinion.

It's inconceivable how people can say there's no proof that second-hand smoke causes damage to bystanders, and hopefully this ban will put an end to the ridiculous amounts of sore-throats I get after visiting particularly smokey pubs.

Why should people be told where they can and can't smoke?
It's stupid.

Fair enough, banning smoking in pubs. But again, in most pubs, you find that there are non-smoking areas already. If you don't want to be near smokers, don't freakin' sit near them.

You know which people piss me off? The ones who choose to stand or sit right next to somebody that has already lit a cigarette, and then they start coughing. They chose to sit there, so don't whine about it.

Sorry..rant over Embarassed

I don't think there should be a ban where you can't smoke in pubs - The majority of people smoke while having a drink.

Imagine it...20 people go out of the pub at the same time to have a cigarette. It's stupid.

I don't even smoke(anymore) and I think it's stupid.

would it be fair of me to say in a pub, excuse me sir/madam would you mind awfully if I p!ss all over your clothes, as you have made mine smell of cigarette smoke.

Now some might say well don't go in the pub in the first place, why not, I want a drink with my good wife (or whoever), IMO I think it's only fair.

I'll prolly get some hammer for this, but my shoulders are broad (but please be careful as they are not strong Razz )

having a no smoking zone in a pub is like having a no pissing zone in a swimming pool... no matter where you sit your still gonna be affected by it.

as for the ban, im all for it... and its not cos ive just quit smoking (even tho i am gagging for one).. its cos when i go out, i stink of smoke and the amount of times some twat has stubbed a fag on me is annoying. being a smoker i used to piss me off how smoky pubs where so i never hardly used to smoke when i was out.. didnt need to as ive already ingested enough.

but think of it in a good point, how many times have you been shit faced and then gone outside and its really hit you, if you smoke outside it would hit you sooner and hopefully sober you up enough to stop you doing anything you might regret in the morning

Just to stir things up... it's about bloody time too!! Where was my right to be free of all that crap?!! It's a disgusting filthy habit and smokers should be made to eat their stubs!!! lol... only kidding. Laughing Laughing

I never had a problem with other people smoking til I developed asthma 2 years ago. I have it bad enough for it to stop me from going out anywhere there was a chance of inhaling even the tiniest bit of smoke. Now I'm back out in the world. ok, so it's only once every 4/6 weeks, but at least I now have the choice.

was at a club last weekend, when i come out of there bout 3am i had pretty much almost lost my voice! id say that was pretty much from smoke inhalation, was in there for about 6 hours so probably inhaled the equivalent of about 200 cigarettes. had a painful swollen throat for a while after, i had to ask myself why do i do this, im getting too old for it all, but if nobody smoked in there im pretty sure i wouldnt get that. id support any smoking ban in pubs and clubs, i really dont wanna have to inhale all that just for a night out.

If everyone who has an opinion on this subject were aware of other (allegedly) dangerous carcinogenics in everyday foodstuffs and cleaning agents, that are widely used, they would realise that tobacco is taking the fall for the world's cancer problems. I'm not saying that tobacco is not unhealthy, but if people feel so strongly on the "anti-smoking in public" side of the argument, I'd like them to be aware of other harmful substances that they inhale or ingest everyday, like carbon monoxide from car exhausts, fluoride rom tap-water, UV rays from sunlight and "safe levels" of carcinogenics in soft drinks like Coca-Cola.

My question is: Are most people SERIOUSLY worried about their long term health as a result of passive smoking? I have several sugestions which lead me to believe that they don't, but you're probably thinking that I'm a stuck-up b*st*rd who loves to hear the sound of his own voice at this stage!

for me personally, its not just the fact that smoke is carcinogenic, i dont like being in confined spaces that are poorly ventilated and lots of people are smoking! i go to a club loacally and sometimes i come out and my voice is almost gone, my throat feels ripped apart and its can sometimes be sore for a day or two so i dislike having to go through all that in order to enjoy my evenings music and dancing and if there was a way i could have all the enjoying stuff of the night without the secondhand smoke id be all for it. also i hate snogging a woman whos just had a cigarette, as a non smoker i can smell it and taste it quite strongly and it aint that nice.
