Britain is truly broken in many senses of the word, financially and morally broken but take it deeper was George Orwell correct when he wrote 1984? Was Animal Farm more specific to the world today rather than Russia in the 1920's? Is the Human Rights Act really needed? More importantly is applied broadly and evenly so it applies to all! Should the 50% tax bracket scoop in the middle earners? What is a middle earner?

It would be interesting to have a sensible discussion about matters that are pertinent to US as the people who have to live with the edicts of our present Government!

I think the biggest problem with this country is the people that are in it. Seriously. Everyone likes to have a whinge and a moan about whatever, but no-one bothers to actually stand up for what or how they think. This is actually quite a popular topic across many forums on the internet at the moment, although sadly i would estimate that 80 - 90 % of them have a racial taint to them, blaming everyone but themselves. Its OUR country, we allowed it to get this way...

I couldn't agree with you more Stu! We do allow them to get away with everything! OK take away the radical options what's left? Proportional representation would even the numbers out a bit but not solve the problem! A civl war! not a sensible option either, a revolution? how long would that work for! their always has to be an elite what ever formation society takes!

Does Labours strength lie in their pandering to the whims of the baby factories and the wasters that thrive on benefits? EG did you know that effectively this govt will put a single man on the street in deference to a teenage mum or an addict?

The things that are really broken and do not work functionally won't get repaired due to fact that so many poor darlings might actually have to do something like go to work!

In the UK we pay road tax! Is it spent on keeping our third world roads up to scratch?

We pay national insurance but it definitely doesn't do what Nye Bevin intended it too!

Brown wants us to be Europeans! Why doesn't he want our taxes and duties to be the same?

all our working lives we are taxed and then we are taxed because we are dead!

Your rubbish bins are spied on as is every move you make!

So what is the answer? Maybe mass and i mean 100% of the country to refuse to vote at an election! What would happen then?

To be honest I can't remember the last time I voted. Why? ..because it's a waste of time. Doesn't matter who gets into power they are always going to line their own pockets first. You can work hard all your life and at the end of the day have nothing to show for it. The ones who are laughing is, ..as eccles said is the teenage baby factories who get knocked up so they can coin in the benefits and not have to work and the immigrants who sneak into the country in the backs of lorries.

I have always said that there is too much "I" and not enough "WE". People are so worried about what will happen to them personally that they do not stand up and say "enough is enough" instead of thinking they can't do anything to so many shouting it all at once.

Middle Earners? Tax has gone crazy for everyone. 5 years ago, I was earning 5.50 and hour and doing 48 hours a week and took home 1100 a month. Until I was made redundant, I was on 6.30, doing 56 hours a week and taking home only 1000. A pound and hour more and 8 hours more a week and still 100 less a month in my pocket. While prices go up, our wages go down, even with the joke 3% rises "in line with inflation" which, in reality, nowhere near meet the rises in living costs every year, even without the tax rises.

It's not just income but police do less and less, sometimes not even bothering to turn up when called. I have even called 999 because someone with a pick-axe handle was threatening myself and my co-workers life. I am still waiting nearly 2 years later for them to respond. This is not the only incident, I could mention several where police have not been bothered to respond.

AH Tryst but it is an obvious fact that the index used to calculate payrises is completely different to the ACTUAL one! Firstly the payrise version takes no account of housing costs or council tax! I currently earn 15.50 an hour! take home 1231 a month! I am currently off work sick! so i get 87.45 a week and have to contribute 45 of that towards my rent! Miss loose knickers gets a damn sight more than that and in many cases (I have seen a few too!)has a boyfriend living with them who is also coining it in thanks to Browns fiddling with the DWPs methods of calculating payments to people! Odd to think but all the extras to the poor hard done by teen mums and all the perks they get coincided with his 1st sprogs arrival?

It's also a fact that the prices are based on a shopping basket of goods that see mostly small rises instead of the huge jumps of other items. It's easy to use such things as bread, most companies strive to keep the price of bread down to remain competitive so any rises are usually not significant.

I also know that the inflation rate of 3% we are told is actually an average monthly increase over the year and not the total for the year. I think anyone with basic math can figure that 3% per month for a year and 3% per year is a significant difference.

The shopping basket also includes such diverse items as camcorders, Ipods and champagne! I certainly don't buy these every week! They are compared right across the country and a mean average is achieved! don't forget though the people in charge don't really have to worry about an extra £5-10 on their baskets! I mean everytime fuel goes up so does your groceries! Fair dos the transport companies can't do it for free? This is just one aspect where i think Brown's so called Labour Party are out of touch with the working person! Look at the rest of it though! If you performed a citizens arrest on an armed violent criminal who would come of worse within our justice system? Should the Govt send convicted criminals back to country of origin? Should certain crimes carry a mandatory life meaning life sentence? Should compensation be paid to ALL victims? Should criminals be made to work during their sentences? The criminally insane they actually get full benefits when incacerated! Is this fair?

It is quite clear that prison doesnt work, hence the prison system is overflowing and the governments lack of investment towards improvement. The only way you could get prisoners to work is to do something such as whip them or beat them when they disobey. Otherwise, how are you actually going to force those prisoners who refuse to work? Do we really want to revert back to mistreatment of people or is there another way? I dont know the answer to that one but I know that because prisons are full many criminals are given lighter non custodial sentences, or short custodial sentences to ease the prison burden. That is no good for any of us.

Offer em perks for work? Ciggies, food, etc don't just give it to them! mind you flogging works in some parts of the world! Sentences for British criminals should be harsher! Foreign crims should be sent home to do their time! Cheaper for a hercules to dump a load of them rather than keeping them in the nick!

Some countries have a prison system that makes them work for their food. No work, no food simple as that. Others will refuse to feed them at all and unless their family brings them food, they starve.

Unfortunately, we have too many do-gooders in the UK who think that human rights are something that cannot be refused. I'm sorry, why does that mean those who commit crime are treated better than those who don't? I believe that if you commit a crime, you automatically give up any rights you had.

The only people who lose all their rights now are car drivers, god forbid you should run a car with no tax disk, you will have it stolen from under you by the government. Take what I own for any reason and I consider it theft, why should the government be allowed to commit this crime? Put road tax on fuel so we pay for the amount we use the road and can't avoid paying it. Nevertheless, there is no excuse for theft. If you owed me £100 and I took your car, it would make me a thief, why are the government legally allowed to do this?

Stealing my car and leaving me unable to travel to work and consequently becoming unemployed is really counter productive as I would then not be paying tax (as in car tax, income tax etc) and also draining existing tax reserves via benefits. Certain things were not thought out so well.

Unfortunately Tryst many things Gordon and Co do are counter productive! eg who is more likely to want a job? A guy who has worked since leaving school or Lucy no knickers who breeds at a phenominal rate! how many of these by products of our so called human rights based society are ever likely to put something back in! We can't blame the Govt entirely because once they produce a mandate it is passed to low key jobsworths to develop! We need to be harder on Mustapha Kemal at Dover! Send him back let the frogs deal with him! they don't give him a flat and more cash than he has ever seen before! The human rights act should be applied across the board and be applied fairly not just for miscreants!

Human rights should only apply to those people behaving in a correct and decent human way. Act like an aggressive, undeveloped animal then you should get treated like one.

I agree Stevie! But our current system of law tenderly pampers them if you treat them like an animal! Also don't forget animals have rights under labour legislation! A mate of mine an estate agent almost got done for describing a room as "big enough to swing a cat in" This is lunacy!
