It must have somehow become activated whilst it was in the bag; perhaps it was jammed up to things which effectively kept it activated for a good while. As for the police, they closed off the motorway and got the driver to pull over onto the hard shoulder - it took an hour or so until the police actually went near the vehicle, but then I imagine that's standard procedure for that sort of situation.

I've smoked them and they don't activate until you actually suck on them, it's the vacuum that triggers an internal switch. There is no way it could be activated in someone's luggage bag and even if it was, the small amount of vapour would be absorbed long before it seeped out of the bag. I am very skeptical about this report, I would say there's more to it than we are being told.

As for the smoking ban, I dislike the fact that smokers have to stand outside in the rain and cold, a smoking room with extractor fans would be just as effective. It would also cut down on sick days due to flu and other ailments caused by getting wet and cold. My attitude to this is that it's an affront to the human rights of people who choose to smoke, there are other ways to avoid passive smoking by non smokers that would allow smokers to have some comfort.

There's little basis for the arguement that it's to try to make smokers quit. Do you realise how much tax revenue the government would lose if everyone quit, not to mention job losses by tobacco companies and such? The government don't want people to quit but they have to be seen to be "politically correct" and tend to bow to minorities now, (anti-democracy). Yes, when this smoking ban came out, you may be surprised to know non-smokers were actually a minority.

Though given the cost of implementing this, I doubt many places would bother anyway if it were an option.

Most of the cafe's would. They lost a lot of their trade after the smoking ban. Most smokers would go for a coffee and maybe a sandwich or cake just to sit and have a cigarette, the ban meant there was no reason to go in them any more. Just before the ban, most cafes had a smoking area which was always packed out while the non smoking areas were almost empty. The ban hasn't encouraged non smokers to come in, it has just discouraged the smokers.

One cafe owner got around it by having a private room by invitation only, since it was not a "public place", it was quite legal. Of course, any smokers were invited. 3 extractor fans kept the room clear of smoke and the cost according to the owner was a mere fraction of the income from smoking customers.
