Atheists' bus ads on the way
Published Date: 22 October 2008
ATHEISTS want to buy advertising space on Edinburgh buses to tell people: "There's probably no God".
Controversial author Professor Richard Dawkins has pledged cash for the venture and more than £20,000 has been raised in individual donations to the British Humanist Association.
The idea came from comedy writer Ariane Sherine, who objected to a series of Christian adverts running on London buses.
Now the atheists plan to hit back with their own adverts and the message. : "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
The ads are due to run in London in January, and organisers then hope to extend them to other UK cities, including Edinburgh.
Quality, like it and why not, after all its a free country and people should have the right to air their views.

I was vaguely interested in this when it was discussed on the radio yesterday, but find a flaw in the advertising.
The ads they are going to run will state "There's probably no God".
The flaw I find with this is that if they say there is *probably* no God, they are not atheist, but agnostic.

agnostic with an atheist bias
actually they are just being realistic because it cannot be proven one way or the other. Hmm, the more I think about this, the more entangled I get. I should also know better than to argue with DH...

Not quite sure on this one, but I did think that the general premise of being agnostic is that something could neither be proved nor disproved (in this case the existence of a god), and that an atheist disbelieved outright (therefore would be unlikely to say ‘probably’, since they would be emphatic that there was definitely no god).
Either way, I am not adverse to the idea of whoever it is advertising whatever they want to, it is their money (or at least money they have raised/have been pledged).

DH is right. Atheists would say "There is no God" - this lot are a tad too PC if you ask me, wont screw their courage to the sticking post for fear of upsetting someone!
It made me think, "If there is *probably* no god, then there possibly *might* be, in which case I'd like to hedge my bets.......oh it's all such a worry - what to do? Enjoy life and sod the consequences? Or be a Believer and err on the side of caution?!!!!!!

You can believe in God without following a religeon. I do. Also you dont have to not believe in god to enjoy life. In fact I enjoy my life much more since I decided I belive in God. I puzzeled over it for many year's, disliking alot of aspect's of almost every religeon, but then I came to realize religeon is not necessary to have spiritual belief's.

Fireinmyheart, I have no idea how your response co-relates to my post, but I agree wholeheartedly with the point you have made regarding enjoying life AND not being Agnostic.
On topic, I wonder which religious group will take offence over these bus adverts?!
22.10.2008, 22:01 quote
Sorry I went of topic I was just refering to the last couple of line's.
As for the question, I think most of them would, apart from Buddhist's.

After reading the OP here tonight I followed some discussion on the topic elsewhere, and strangely enough (or perhaps not!), most of the people taking offence seem to be the PC brigade rather than religious groups.
God is probably peeing Herself laughing at the idea that people are spending money to advertise the fact that She probably doesn't exist.
22.10.2008, 22:32 quote
.....and seeing all those feathers ruffled on them that think She probably does exist, and the PC Brigade getting their knickers in a twist...and if there is no god after all, well it would be money well spent and God wont give a shite cuz if you dont exist you dont have any opinion do you?
23.10.2008, 07:44 quote
Some quite funny replies here
I for one agree with DH in that if it's atheists point of view, then it should be DOESN'T exist. I don't think god probably doesn't exist I KNOW he/she/it doesn't
And before anyone asks, I have as much fact and proof of the non-existance as you do of the existance of a god ![]()
