Bank account details belonging to thousands of Britons are being sold in West Africa for less than £20 each, the BBC's Real Story programme has found.

Full story here

That is scary.

To format an HDD is purely not good enough.

The article actually says "deleting all your files" isn't good enough.

Formatting is an acceptable solution - it takes a literal computer genius to recover files from a format, and even then - usually you can only see a file name, not contents of the file.

There is some good recovery programs out there swiss as you prolly know, I know they can't get all data back or so I am led to believe.

I have formatted a few HDD's in my time and managed to recover several files, obviously not all.

I prefer to wipe files with certain shredders as this is more secure than just a format.

A good deep level format is more than enough to throw off anyone in south africa from getting bank details.

You'd need to reconstruct an entire operating system, all the cookies, and then somehow get all 3 individual pieces of data that make up the regular online banking login data.

You're right though, it's possible to recover some data with mainstream tools - but there's a reason online banking has a bad reputation for security - it's called "the customer" and they're notoriously stupid, leaving passwords all over their computer for all and sundry to see

I disagree, there are some good programmes for retrieving data from formatted media (even FDisked media). Your best bet (and IMHO the most fun) is the physical destruction of the actual media... Twisted Evil

As I said, you need to reconstruct so much data, all of which much be complete, to get someone's bank details.

I was told by a good friend of mine that even if you smash your HDD, parts of the platters can still be read by the powers that be if needed?????

Yep and you replied quicker...

The story does not say that the data has been reconstructed...

People are still being urged to give away their old PCs, but only after they have wiped the hard drive - not just to remove any bank details but also other personal information such as home addresses.

This implies (to me) thatthe data is being held in files rather than cookies...

Yep, I imagine these are the same people who write all their passwords down on their computer.

After thousands of warnings, if these people still continue to do it - they deserve to lose their money. Firewalls and security measures can only do so much, the user has to put in a little effort.

Well if not, then rather difficult to recover...
