Home >> World-issues >> Why Do People Mock Scientology?
29.06.2007, 10:23 quote
Light reading of Scientology will tell you why people think its a joke. It's not a religion, its a cult created by a sci-fi writer. That should be all the explanation you need. While we can trace evidence of Christianity, Judism and Islam and the existance of its main characters back through time (with sources and evidence beyond the Bible before anyone throws that one at me), scientology just poped up with no explanation other than "here it is according to one bloke".
It is however quite possibly the greatest money making scheme ever. It also goes to show what lenghts people will go to for attention, ala Tom Cruise.
29.06.2007, 11:00 quote
It is not a religion, it is a criminal organization...
If you want to become rich, just make up a sect and tell everyone they should give you all their money as they don't need it in their after life
Stealing the money is not the biggest crime...but killing people or driving them to commit suicide if they want to leave the sect is.
It is weird that the USA try to ban pornography (or alleged pornography) but not propaghanda films.

Well come on, …if anyone should have the piss taken out of them it’s scientologists.
The fact that so many Hollywood actors are members says it all really lol
17.07.2007, 14:57 quote
Leg's right- just as Kabbalah was mocked when every Hollywood star started to wear their red string bracelets, Scientology is the new celeb faith craze. Just the fact that Tom Cruise is so fanatical about it makes it worthy of a few laughs.
17.07.2007, 15:17 quote
I still remember that episode of SouthPark, ...the scientology one that Tom Cruise tried to sue them over lmao
thats still one of my favourites
17.07.2007, 17:14 quote
I'm atheist, but I see no reason to mock anyone for their beliefs. As for the youtube clip, it sure as hell wasn't put together by Mormons, rather a mock up of a non-mormons views.
Why can't people be left to live in a way that suits them, that includes me?! According to one of the religious places down the road from me, i don't exist because I'm an atheist!!
Leave me to my beliefs and I'll leave you to yours. If more lived by that one simple statement, we'd all get on so much better.
30.09.2007, 22:22 quote
Because they should. It is entirely worthy of the most sophisticated mockery known to man.
PS ever hear the story of the woman who wouldn't treat her very minor/treatable cancer because she was a scientologist? Yeah, because she died needlessly due to her beliefs. I would venture to say she could of used a few of the methods employed in the world of psychology regarding cult theories but that would go against everything she believed in--the key word being believed.
OR the family who WOULD NOT treat their son who was schizophrenic? He eventually couldn't take the voices in his head which kept telling him to kill the entire family... Yeah, that worked out real nice for all of them.

You have to differentiate between criminal organizations and religious groups.
The only reason why they are allowed in the USA is because they have already infiltrated the government partly and influential positions are already occupied by Scientology.
The only reason why they are not banned in other countries is that is is much easier to observe then.
The important thing is that the Youth Welfare Office takes away the children of parents that belong to Scientology to protect them.
03.11.2007, 01:02 quote
Isn't *anything* propaganda if you don't agree with it? If you believed what the 'propoganda' was saying you would call it a sensible argument...or whatever?
Someone said the other day
Its a religion if you believe in it
its a cult if you don't believe in it and dont understand it
its a sect if you dont believe in it and it scares the shite out of you
I don't knock anyone's religion/cult/sect - I'm Catholic and many a time i've had the piss taken but I can live with that. Each to their own.
I don't have any idea what scientology entails - i've never been interested enough to bother learning about it - so I'm not in a position to be for or against it.
But seeing as Tom Cruise and John Travolta have shoved it in our faces a bit thru the media the only impression of it that i've gleaned is "what a potty lot of crap"......but like i said a lot of people say that about the catholics so who am I to judge?!

I have read parts of Dianetics and its over simplistic view of the mind is plain wrong. It says that the reactive mind stores all the bad experiences a person has and uses them against them. But the mind does not work like that.
They think that every phobia and even phyiscal problem a person has can be traced back to a bad experience someone had, or even bad words they heard either while awake or asleep. Remember that before starting Scientology Hubbard took his writtings to leading pychiatrists and they rebuffed him stating that his findings and ideas about the mind were wrong. |
Having trained as a psychotherapist, I have to disagree with you there - please tell me where you get your information from?
Why do you think hypnosis/torture and brainwashing whilst a person is asleep actually works?
Saying that, I do agree with it being 'over simplistic' and I would take out the word "all" - but still, most phobias and dysfunctional thinking is born out of experience.
Might I add as an aside that Greystone you are a very good looking young man but you have had years of hearing from friends and family that you are ugly and you now believe that tripe?
