I was checking through some old papers and documents the other night and right at the bottom I find a love letter written to my mum by my dad , when he was serving in the Navy in Korea over 55 years ago. I was very impressed , ..was well written and knew just what to say. Then it occurred to me I’d never written anything like that, ….not sure if I ever will.

Do women still like romantic gestures like that or are those days long gone? Would you swoon or would you cringe?

Who's actually written one?

Kev always writes me a few paragraphs in every card he's sent me since we met - and it beats flowers and chocs anyday

So come on guys, Valentines day is coming up - get your ''pens'' out

i tend to do the same, i put a bit about how i feel in a card. trying to avoid valentines day this year, just had enough of it tbh, i tell my gf often how she makes me feel and what i feel for her. valentines day is too much about consumerism, its rammed down your throat in practically every shop these days, it kind of puts me off now when i see all that pink and red stuff over at the card stands Laughing

Yeah, when I lived in cornwall I was seeing a guy in hampshire so we only met up once every couple of months - we did the usual texting/email/phone call thang but we still wrote long letters to each other - it IS more romantic and personal than txt/email - like you found out, you can keep hand-written letters for donkeys years where as txt/email are gone forever in the click of a button.....how many of your great-grand kids are going to giggle and weep over your emails and texts, compared to hand-written letters lovingly kept safe in a shoebox tied up with red ribbon??!! Very Happy

Gosh that reminds me when I was at college age 16 this lad I really fancied - on valentines day he put a handwritten poem under my locker door and signed it - I rushed to my mate all excited ---- and she had exactly the same thing too, signed by him and all. Crying or Very sad

From my youth I have quite a few and I always appreciated them. Most guys then used to write songs and poetry more than love letters.

To be honest, as much as I love that kind of romantic expression it now reminds me more of all the web scammers, 'cos they use so much of that sloppy, over the top romantic garble it's spoilt it all............................

A letter through your door though is personal to you, ….not the sort of drivel you get on the internet. It would be from someone who knows you and not simply a guy who’s trying to get your knickers off.

If I had somebody to do it for, I would always try to put into words exactly how I felt. Its saying it I have the problems with.

Funny enough i was tidying through and old box of photos and stuff that i had left at my mum since me and my hubby split up, i found a couple of letters and cards we had sent each other ........... have to agree with Claudia, i love receiving letter and and cards, much more personal than nipping to Sainsburys for some flowers ........... So in answer to your question Jim, YES girls still love that sort of thing ................... Very Happy

Ah but if women don’t let it be known that they have a sentimental soul then of course they aren’t going to receive stuff like that because a guy would be embarrassed to put pen to paper if they are just going to be laughed at in return. In all fairness though its not a dig at you as I know you like that stuff, ..just talking about women in general

When i was in my late teens my then boyfriend was in the RAF, and was abroad an awful lot, so we used to write all the time, at least once a week. I used to love seeing the blue airmail letter-et thing come through the letter box in the mornings.

The last time i received a love letter from a boyfriend was..........erm..........that would have been in my late teens from the boyfriend in the RAF!!!

How sad. Saving messages on a computer isn;t the same as being able to feel a letter in your hands and possibly smell some of 'him' or 'her' on the pages.

Well because my blokes have always tended to be in the forces (funny that) when they go away ive always had loads. Im a sucker for romance, ive written quite a few in my time as well. I think they are a lovely and simple way to make your other half feel valued and loved.

Unless of course the note says "and don't forget the teabags this time!" hehe, but anyways the fact that you send him off with a sandwich box has an AAAHhhhhhh Factor of 10 out of 10 to me! Very Happy
