Just because I learnt what it is, doesn't mean I know any more about it. Its just numbers.

1680*1050, sadly this means that many sites just use a tiny amount of the screen space.

This site for example.

Same here. I think that is the best size for my 17" monitor. I'll do a higher resolution when i get a bigger screen. Currently I'm eyeing up a 19" wide-screen, although I might go for bigger if I can afford it.

I didn't think that anyone used 800x600 anymore. Do those people also run windows 95, on a 133mhz pc, with a 10" monitor ?

Well if the monitor couldn't handle it there's the potential that you couldn't see anything but it's easily reset to last working setting.

Surprisingly, a large majority of people do use 800*600 still. I think you'd find if everyone on this site took part in the poll you'd find 800*600 the most popular resolution, but so far the majority of people who polled who use higher res seem to use their computer for techie stuff (or have laptops?). Joe Average who just surfs, types a few letters, whatever, doesn't bother upgrading their equipment that often, anmd doesn't bother with things like best screen resolution for the size of their monitors (I know someone who has a very expensive 21" Sony monitor and runs it at 800*600, he doesn't know any better).

I still have to build web sites at fixed page width to suit maximum 800*600, although I'd rather not. But it does look neater at higher res Smile

I generally hve mine set at 1280x1024 for browsing on my desktop, the laptop has a resolution of 1024x768 which makes it easy for me to check sites in both resolutions.

From my current server logs (4 servers, 37 sites) the general settings seem to be 1024x768 but as monitors are getting bigger, people are sure to go for a higher resolution picture. theres maybe 1% of the total still using 800x600.

I used to develop for 1024x768 and below with notices on sites about the best resolution etc, but recently have started to develop for 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 as well as the more popular resolution.

It pays to think about settings like this and your other post, I'll be keeping an eye on it mate.

charming Dave - I still have a IBM Thinkpad 380ED - Win 98, 800x600 max resolution, as well as a few other bits of ancient technology.

I've just changed my laptop to 800x600 to see what you were all on about. And woah. I can't cope with it that big. The smaller the better. It looks tidier.
