SO what sort of cheap thrills do virus producers get when they know they are possible damaging other peoples lives. I picked up a horrid virus that damaged the hardware of my laptop, luckily I had backed up all my writing (like a good boy does) and I didn't lose anything much...but for some people this can be devastating...so why do they do it

Some of the big computer virus come from the Anti-Virus software companies themselves to help sell their products ... Problem - reaction - Solution

Problem = Computer Virus
reaction = User wants it fixed
Solution = Buy our Anti-Virus Software to destroy the virus...

allegedly... Wink Evil or Very Mad

Some tips:
Don't use email preview option.
NEVER open an email with an '.exe' attachment. If its from someone you know email them back first if unsure.
Use pop-up blockers
Only use websites you can trust.

another tip - don't use latest software many of the latest virus wont install correctly due to the different Windows folder structure. A Virus will write to C drive but cant always find the correct windows folders or files to complete the infection.

Of course you could get around 99.99% of problems with viruses, adware spyware etc by using a different operating system and avoiding microsoft Smile

Very debatable, most programs can be run on other OS's using either vm's or programs such as WINE. And even if they can't there are always alternatives that, in a lot of cases, are better than the windows counter part. The only thing windows is actually required for is gaming. Apart form that other OS's will have free programs that can do exactly what you want. Not only no viruses but you don't have to pay a penny for any of it Smile
