SO what sort of cheap thrills do virus producers get when they know they are possible damaging other peoples lives. I picked up a horrid virus that damaged the hardware of my laptop, luckily I had backed up all my writing (like a good boy does) and I didn't lose anything much...but for some people this can be devastating...so why do they do it

Very debatable, most programs can be run on other OS's using either vm's or programs such as WINE. And even if they can't there are always alternatives that, in a lot of cases, are better than the windows counter part. The only thing windows is actually required for is gaming. Apart form that other OS's will have free programs that can do exactly what you want. Not only no viruses but you don't have to pay a penny for any of it Smile

you cant run much music software on linux i've looked b4.tempted to pop linux on an old desktop though as it's less of a resource hog.

What sort of music software is it you're after, editing, mixing etc ? I saw a discussion on this a while ago but can't remember what apps people recommended. It's getting better for everything now including multimedia editing and there are lots of good apps about. The next ubuntu for example is coming with a big multimedia editing suite which looks pretty cool.

Definately uses less resources, especially if you sack off the desktop environments such as KDE or Gnome and use something lightweight like flubox instead, can run it very nicely on old hardware.

i use vsts and seqencer mainly,i know you can get a seqencer for it but it wont run vsts at the moment but think thats gonna change very soon.
