I had AVG free edition before losing my net connection last year obviously that needs updating so i tried to remove the old version to find it wasnt in my programs which is confusing as its in the toolbar trying to run? anyhow since i figured it wasnt in the program list to remove I was wondering if i am ok to download the new free AVG version. The link to update the old version isnt happening so i went to AVG's site to download new version am I doing the right thing?

Ive always used AVG and never screwed it up yet....Done various upgrades. I think it automatically deletes any old files and updates any too.

AVG automatically updates, but with the latest version there can sometimes be problems with automatically updating. If this happens make sure you are connected to the internet and open your AVGs main page and manually select to update, it should work.

I'm getting this problem everytime I use my laptop, an error appears saying update manager isnt on then when I press Fn F1 to connect to the internet I have to go in and update it??? Its a pain in the arse!
Anyone know why this happens, I'm not very technical with computers

Are you using a wireless connection?

If so then I tink that the problem is that the AVG automatic update software loads up when you turn your computer on, before your computer has even got a chance to connect to the internet.

Therefore the software will not recognise an internet connection and fail the update.

As for how to fix this I am not sure, unless there is a way of being able to set the order of tasks your computer does upon a startup.

Yes using wireless from our main P.C. Does that make sense? I understand what you mean about it not recognising the internrt connection at start up, but not sure how to fix it ..

Thanks for your help though Smile

You can change AVG so that it doesn’t load at startup, and then start it manually from a quick launch icon once you *do* have an internet connection, that way it will update automatically. As far as I know, it’s the only workaround. Are you using Windows? If so, which version? I can post the instructions for turning off AVG loading at startup if you let me know which Windows version you are using.

That would be helpful... thanks.

Only thing is, its not Windows - its Vista !

Vista is a version of Windows.

Doing the following doesn’t really resolve the problem, as it still requires a manual start of AVG, so it doesn’t really save any time, in some ways you might as well just continue doing a manula update of AVG the way you have been doing.

Click on Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/System Configuration and then click on the Startup tab. Under the Startup items list, look for AVG Internet Security and uncheck it, click on Apply, then click on OK. Your computer will reboot for changes to take effect. (Incidentally, this is also where you can turn other software that loads automatically when Windows starts up to 'off', and save memory resources - don't turn anything off that you don't understand though!!)

Once your computers starts up, wait till you have an internet connection then launch AVG manually (i.e. double click on an AVG icon on your desktop or launch it from your Programs list).

I have to say that I have the same problem with my own computers/laptop, but haven’t bothered doing either the above or the below – connecting to the AVG server manually to update AVG after one has an internet connection isn’t all that much of a chore really.

There a way of forcing Vista to load AVG *after* everything else has loaded and you have established an internet connection, but (and I’m not being rude, just remembering that you said you weren’t very technical), you probably won’t want to fiddle about with cmd line prompts. In theory, you could force most verisons of Windows to load your software in a specific order, which is quite useful.

Just a belated update to this problem ......

I noticed that with the combination of Vista updates and the latest version of of Zone Alarm (the free version), this problem has resolved on both my computer and laptop, and AVG doesn't try to connect to the update server until after and internet connection has been established. Since the 2 updates I've been keeping an eye on the load sequence of my task bar icons, and my firewall and internet connection are now the first to load at startup.

can i say firstly that avg whilst low on recourse consumption, isn't actually a very good av. if you google the eicar test and download the test files you'll notice avg doesnt spot them until after theyre inside your pc and being opened. you're much much better off with avast, which is also a free av and also vista compatible
