I know its a strong word but their routers are absolutely shit. I was trying to forward some ports so i could play one of my beloved games and i cant even get into the damn hub menu. So i thought id be sly and try the good old back door with 192.168.1.1 and that did not even work either. I have had nothing but trouble with their stinking hardware. Their actual service has been great but i am going to need to buy a new router now as this one is kaputt for good since i see myself throwing it against the wall really soon. I had to use an old voyager 105 from 3 years ago that has a direct connection and no fussy hub menu to deal with. Now my neighbor who is piggy backed onto my line via WIFI cant even get on either as i am no longer using that useless piece of BT JUNK.
I have been up all night trying to get this stupid thing to work. First it was the network connections that was acting up and would not let me assign a static IP no matter how many times i assigned it and clicked ok. Finally i got fed up with the whole lot and did a boot and nuke on the drive to write nothing but zeros in order to get rid of problem and then did a fresh install of XP. At least the updates and installation of XP went quick and painless and that was the only thing good about the whole night.

So here i am at 6 am with a half dead system it feels like but at least i am back online but BT CAN SHOVE IT.

/rant off

I think BT (like a lot of other internet service providers who give you equipment when you sign up) have the own 'firmware built into the equipment, difficult to work around. Sometimes it's possible to download the original firmaware and get them running as they were menat ot run by the original manufacturer - if it's BT branded equipment, it is almost certainly made by someone else and rebranded.

Yeh, I use Linksys, got one of those WRT54GC wireless compact ones, but since my laptop is bust, I only use it as a wired router (for the PC and a network hard drive).

What have BT and pelicans got in common?

They can both stick their bills up their arse.
