HI all. I have a linksys wireless G router connected via ethernet (NTL cable BB) to my main pc..for some reason the router went wonky last night, and i had to do a few major restarts..the pc, the router and the NTL cable set top box. Then when I reboot everything the only online page I can get is start.tnl, this is the one I used to initialy register my pc to NTLS network, had to do it again when I installed the router. However after another retart today I managed to get here..dont know how long for though.

So I guess my questions are: why did this happen? How can I avoid it again? Shall I burn it with fire?

xx

There could be loads of reasons for the network to crash temporarily.
If you are worried, ring the support line and check with them.
Don't install/upgrade anything - "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
The router is always on yeah? You should be able to access logs on the router, do they give you info?

Thanks guys. Yeah the router is on and working, maybe it was just NTL going rse up rather than my pc?? there are still a few sites I cnt access, it just goes to NTL internal page.

This sounds like one of their routers went down then and the reason you can't access certain sites is that it takes the big internal routers some time to re-build their routing tables after certain types of errors if they have to re-build their BGP tables this will usually take a good few hours and that router will only have restricted connectivity during that period.
Ah that makes more sense, i was still connected at 100mb though. and even though I had put in my PID number it still wouldnt do anything Sad Lets see if MSN works then lol

The 100mb connection is simply the speed you get between your PC and your router, if you unplug your router from the broadband connection so you have no Internet connectivity whatsoever and plug your PC into your router it will still report a 100mb connection, your Internet connection (as it's ADSL) will be nowhere near this speed. The connection info on your PC simply represents the connection to your router which can be confusing.
ah right I see, yeah I though 100mb was a bit high, my cable is only about 1 mb

it also possible that someone in your area was tryng to clone your modem which would cause you to lose your cable feed for a while...

Doesn't matter, anything like a modem can be relatively easily cloned from within the same subnet, it all depends again on how your ISP's network is set up. Unfortunate but relatively simple to anyone in the know.
n the know, oh well in that case im alright, the ppl in my street dont even have any f*cking teeth let alone pc know-how!!

The people on your subnet don't neccessarily have to be near you if your ISP is using something called VLAN's which it most likely is they could be anywhere in the country.
You're making me feel sad Sad

So I'm not buggered then? Smile

to clone a cable modem, someone would have to sniff the mac address of your modem, which is simple to do with a network sniffer...they then use a special cable to write this macaddress onto the chip of the modem they are hacking. If someone in your subnet has sniffed your macaddress, it wont work on the same subnet, they need to use your mac address in another subnet. There are forums about where these mac addresses are swapped about...its a rather simple way to get a free internet supply (its illegal too)

no , youre not buggered...the person cloning will just move on to the next mac address on his list...

you need a max 232 serial cable to write it to a cable modem...i can show you a tutorial of how to do it if youre interested (for educational purposes only, of course)

Aye, I was talking about IP address cloning not mac, you don't even need a special cable to write it, you just use a pc router with a NIC that allows you to choose your own mac address, also most ISP's now hold tables that check for this so it's pretty useless in a lot of cases.

for this hack to work you have to write to the chip on the modem by setting up a tftp server and writing it through hyperterminal...you also have to flash the modems firmware Very Happy
