Several, for different reasons.
I really admired Tracy Edwards's guts, enjoyed being 'entertained' by Muhammed Ali and Big Daddy, and just plain adored Eddie Macken and admired his skill.

Lance Armstrong. Without a shadow of a doubt. To come through his illness to win the hardest sporting event 7 times in a row is incredible. Just completing a Tour de France is a huge effort, so to win it 7 times is superhuman.

Yeah anyone can pick the obvious....Ali, Schumacher, McEnroe, Woods, Pele etc etc...

I was thinking about this and based on actually being 'sporting' I've decided to pick Ellen MacArthur, as during the Vendee Globe Single Handed Race in 2000, she diverted her yacht 'Kingfisher' to rescue the French rival Yves Parlier, whose mast had broken in heavy seas over 2000 miles from any landfall. Now that really is sporting, and incredibly gutsy.

i hae the most respect for Ellen, she has done some amazing things and i agree she is very special. However, the whole rescue thing is not that special. in offshoe Yacht racing, if someone is in trouble you divert to help them. it's a given that she would, she had no choice. It is an unwritten rule, so she shouldn't really get extra credit (shed doesn't need it) for that rescue because every other sailor near the stricken boat would have gone to help, no questions asked. She probably wanted a bit of company too Smile
