has always been my ambition. Visit all the well known and historical places.
England, Scotland, Wales and maybe Ireland. Will probably take about 3 months and looks like something I'll have to do on my own. But would be interesting Smile

Go for it. Have you got a list ? "Well known" is a bit vague. I'm nosy what, for example, would be in your top 20 list. I try to go to nearby towns and places close to people I know that interest me, when I go and visit friends I have around the country. It kinda combines seeing them and a mini holiday

The country is full of history, most towns and Cities have something that happened. But its also visiting famous natural landmarks like Ben Nevis, Loch Ness, Mount Snowdon etc.. I'll be open to some suggestions though Smile
Also depends if I go with anyone or on my own.

It'll be just leaving my house with a loose plan, visiting family and possibly people I know on the net from around the country, and seeing where it takes me. There's something all around Britain.

Haven't really got a plan, and wont happen for at least a year or so, but you never know whats going to happen.

If you really want to do it, get busy with a plan. Don't hang about. Plans are made to be broken, but at least you'll get a better idea of where to go, the cost of doing it and things like that. It could even be done in stages rather than this grand plan, and that would be less scary too. As you say, too. everywhere has history, so you could be making use of days off and weekends to visit things that are not so far away.

In the last month, I took some pictures about my new local city, rode a bike to a nearby town and took some pictures at a folk festival and learnt a bit of the town's history from a friend whilst we were walking about. I'll be doing more rides to places nearby over the coming weeks & months, too, to learn more about the area around me.

You might even want to put together a blog and pictures. There's loads of websites online for making that simple enough to do.

Here's a challenge. If you have a camera and at least a day to spare over the next week. Do some local sightseeing and reading about where you live or nearby, and if you have a digital camera take some picture. If the blog & photo thing interests you, then do a little writing on it all, and show off the pictures you have taken.

Up for it ?

Thanks mate

I will be doing a blog, and I'll probably build my own web site. How I do it will depend on how the next year or so unfolds, and what I decide I want to do with regards to work. Also who comes with me, if anyone But I would like to do it all in one go. Its something I've been thinking about for about 10 years or more, and recently someone said they would come with me, but that fell through.

To be honest Dave I'm no good at making or sticking to plans, I mainly take everyday as it comes. I'll probably leave my house, go to Grimsby where my brother lives then see where I go next. The problem is this country is so rich in history, we are spoilt for choice. The Town near where I live [Dunstable] Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn and they celebrate it every year now with a festival.

When I do it I want to more or less take everyday as it comes, with just a load of maps and books to go on, and also chat to locals. Probably the Internet as well.
I'm not sure if I'll stay in hotels, some kind of mobile home, tents or a mixture of them. Or maybe even hostels.

It'll just be a stress free three months of enjoying Britain Wink

But I'm open to any ideas and recommendations if anyone reading this has anything good near them that is worth looking at, anywhere in Britain and Ireland Smile

That's a long time to wait. I'm not much good at plans myself, but I always have a to-do list of big and small things, and I lie to myself that it is all going to get done. It never does, but some of it does, and plans develop as time goes on if I don't do them or get forgotten.

If big plans are not your thing, then I would strongly urge you to play to your strengths, forget the big plans & grand ideas, and do something more like I suggested. Not because I've said it, but precisely because it seems to fit the sort of person you say that you are. A decade of planning .... it's too much! Do it!

As for the website thing, unless you're good at that sort of thing, again I would say to use someone elses pre-built solution, whether it is one you host on your on webspace or some sort of service like blogger & flickr. It's just a tool to get a job done. Even a lot of well known geeks and people running big projects do that sort of thing, rather than try to do it themselves.

Its not really been a decade of planning, more a decade of 'maybe one day'. I'm interested in history and I read a lot about it, and I've often thought I'll go here or there, but there are too many places to go in this country. I might even sell my house to do it, before the big house price crash, that is bound to come Wink Someone rekindled it when they said they would go with me, but that was maybe never going to happen.

Too be honest I just want the flimsiest of plans and see where it takes me. I've got a map of old battle grounds and Britain is covered with them. I also want to make love being watched by the Loch Ness monster, on the banks of the Loch in the evening Not sure if that's kinky or romantic though lol Razz

Obviously I will plan a start date, and a few months before get loads of information, and I have a few things in mind.

I am pretty good at building websites, and I will do it all myself Wink
