I've not had a holiday for years, but I dont like hot, beach holidays - not my scene. What i'd like to do is visit somewhere with lots of history and places to visit in the UK so I can drive there, maybe spooky places, or places with good castles to explore, or high tech/science stuff, or camping 'bushcraft' type stuff....y'know, smething different (or dull, depends on your point of view i guess).....

any suggestions?

Yeah I already had a week in Cheddar Gorge a few years back (one of the few places i HAVE been) and it was fantastic, thoroughly recommend a visit to everyone! Not just Cheddar itself but the surrounding 10 miles - loads of great places to visit.

Wiltshire is really great, Salisbury and Marlborogh are great places. The place that most fits your bill taht i can think of is the Isle of Wight, has all you mentioned and more, not bad considering its such a small island. xx

Ahh Wiltshire is great too - I went to Stonehenge (rip off) and Avebury (lovely but small) ...but then again I am a bit 'fortean' so enjoy anything a bit paranormal etc....

I'm thinking of visiting the Romney Marshes and surrounding areas, but that's more a weekend thing

East Anglia has a diverse range of interesting things, and you can travel a milage really quick. There's boating on the Broads, to the North Norfolk coast where there are rich habitats for wildlife and bird reserves. Then there are museums in a lot of the towns/villages, very old churches, National Trust places, The Muckleborough Collection(military), boat trips to see the seals, technolgy centre (at Swaffham), extreme sports, zoos, steamtrains. The city of Norwich is steeped in history yet it has art galleries, venues for live music and loads of night life and clubs.

Hmmm....Smethwick....home to many of the engineers of the industrial revolution, I could go and have a look at Galton Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1829. And it's a shame they moved the original Smethwick Engine (made by steam pioneers Boulton and Watt) up to ThinkTank, but at least it's been preserved i guess.

( btw - Did you know that Smethwick was visited by activist Malcolm X in 1965, where he gave his last TV interview before being assassinated 9 days later.)
