If you have relatives visiting from miles away, what local things would you take them to see? (apart from the pub etc!)
Here in WGC a lot of people visit from miles away just to see the town itself, built on designs for 'Garden Cities' by Ebenezer Howard back in the 1920's (the other 2 being Letchworth Garden City and Hampstead Garden Suburb).
Then there's the ancient 'Roman Baths' in a vault underneath the A1M....they found it when building the road, and also there is Mill Green Museum with a working waterwheel and they grind flour and make bread there etc.
So not much really lol...plenty in Hertfordshire in general though!

Just wanted to say that I think this thread is a great idea 'cos I'm planning to travel a bit around Britain and I reckon I'll be clearer about the places I wanna go from the information likely to be included here. The fact that it'll cover local viewpoints has gotta be a plus, and I might even meet a few fbx members on my travels.

Leith hill
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leith_Hill
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-leithhill.htm
supposedly the highest point in southern england. its great for rambling as theres woods and walks around the whole area, stunning view on a clear day. if i was going with a fellow cyclist id chuck the bikes on the back of the car, drive up it and do some off roading in the woods before taking a wild ride down the hill to see if i can break my cycling speed record
but then of course id have to cycle back up it and that is not something to look forward to lol

Well there's a place called the fort down by the thames, and its where WWII soldiers were based to protect london from invasion by enemys trying to attack via the river!!
And no one ever did make it past that point of the river, its made up of lots of underground tunnells in which those brave bastards lived during the blitz and all that, with amunition rooms and living quaters.
And they still got some of the cannons and guns up on top of the mounds where they would pick off the jerry's on air raids!! very cold down there and yes its haunted tooooooo
Oh and pocahontas grave is just up the road!!
And we've got the oldest serviving cast iron pier in the WORLD oooohhhh i know with a nice pub on top of it and soon to be restaurant at the end.
Its quite an historic town gravesend realy!!

The prom in summer is a good place to go and cool down and were lucky to have that space right by the river, there aren't to many places in or around london (thats by the thames) that have that!! all in all i think the town is on the up, slowly but surely??

Well, I suppose home in the North east has loads of places to see and it would depend who was visiting where I would take them - perhaps Middlesbrough to bring reality home that it isnt all great there, then a trip over the moors as a good contrast. Loads.
Here in Southport, I would have to take them to the Lawnmower museum. We used to have 3 attractions - Pleasureland, Funland and the Lawnmower museum. Pleasureland has closed so now its a choiuce of lawnmowers or funland.

In Chicago, I like to take people to Millenium Park, Navy Pier, and down Michigan Avenue for shopping, especially in Water Tower Place Mall. Other cool places to visit are China Town, Wrigleyville for a Cubs Game and the sports bars, all of the great museums, such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Art Institute of Chicago and a nice walk down the coast of Lake Michigan. My favorite thing to do here is to grab a cup of coffee and go for a walk around the city

Roslyn Abbey if your intersted in the Davinci Code crap. Edinburgh Castle, Scottish Parliment, Arthurs Seat (big hill in the middle of edinburgh), just ouside you can visit the pentland hills, if you want to experience the Irvine Welsh vibe you can head down Leith Walk for a stroll or you can walk up the Royal Mile and spit on the Heart of midlothian for good luck! Plenty of famous landmarks and things to see and do in Edinburgh!
