Because there are plenty of other features Toby can spend his time on that would be more beneficial to the community - also, I know he's not gotten as far as making "custom setting" features. Plus, and this one is most important of all - he's already stated that a custom option showing "only females" for straight gay males will slow the site down - this is called a "user-specific" feature. A "profile views" that is user specific (IE, either on or off) will slow the site down for those of us who don't use it, not just those who do. |
So basically you're saying that the feature is good, but for now Toby should work on other stuff, and come back to this once it's technically possible and he has the time?
I can accept that a lot better that the outright refusal ;o)

Not on a site of 160,000+ users it doesn't. |
It is a pattern when it has happened that often to me. And if you look at other sites with the feature and multiply the number of times it has happened with the number of users, you have your pattern...

You chose to read the start of my post but not the latter part labelled "most important" ?
I already said it'll slow the site down for the rest of us. This feature, as an "optional" Toby has already said will slow down the website. That's why we haven't gotten as far as custom colour schemes or "who is online" targetted specifically for our sexual orientation.

No, that's what I meant by "technically possible"...

I don't see any statistics besides you saying it happened to you 10 times.
We have people on this site who receive no messages and send out hundreds, we have people who receive hundreds of messages and send out none.
Your situation could well be a fluke, you haven't proven it isn't by saying you're not the only one.
What applies on other sites doesn't have to apply here.

Choose to shoot me down however you want - I see people using this feature a lot when it's available even if I can't back it up by solid numbers... Let's just say that for me PERSONALLY it's been a better way to strike up a conversation than writing a letter.
All this online dating is about creating contact, and this is just another way of doing it. So if it's possible... (I know...)

That's a very big but, it's like saying you could walk on the moon if you had a rocket, a few million dollars in funding and a space suit. It's possible, but it's not only not realistic - it's not a sensible idea. This site's not designed for an optional-feature scenario. And please don't put words in my mouth - I didn't once say this feature is good.

I'm shooting you down every way I want. We have one person every week come on here complaining about not being able to see who viewed their profile, each time they give exactly the same arguements (they never offer suggestions though, so your suggestions are appreciated) and then leave, frustrated because they didn't get their way.
I appreciate personally it's worked well for you in the past - but on here it's run differently, people value their privacy and like being able to look but not give away their intentions. If people are curious, they strike up a conversation.

Let's not get personal here... it's not that unrealistic, and it IS a sensible idea in the future (costs will go down (technology, calculating power and hosting, will get cheaper).
And while you haven't said that the feature is "good" you haven't given one reason it's bad except for technical reasons. So from a pure "dating site" point of view you dont seem to think it's a bad idea?

Give me one good reason why it's sensible for you to go to the moon now?
There isn't any, even NASA's only going back there cos Bush wants to use it as a training ground for mars.
It's highly unrealistic - you're not an astronaut. Even Mr Virgin (ol' Bransdon himself) is offering the most of a flight out of the atmosphere and that's out of the realms of anyone here.
But since we're not getting personal, nope - I can't see a good reason why you can't have this feature - as long as it can be switched off and is off by default, doesn't slow the site down for the rest of us and doesn't get priority over the over more-important features on this site that are still missing.
Sounds like a fair deal?

Fair enough.

Are you kidding!? This being a dating site and me being single, there'd be nothing more sensible that walking on the moon! Can you imagine striking up a conversation in a bar and being asked what you do and being able to say "Well, last week I walked on the moon..."?

So, it's sensible to spend millions to walk on the moon just to have a chatup line?
Still, you've got a reply for everything I guess

Come on - if you had the millions why not do it?! Save them for your ungrateful kids? No, not me... It would be BTE!
