Im ok with being a geek. If reading or being into something thats not mainstream means I have to take that label then so be it. Im not spotty or fat. I might look like a mess sometimes but thats on purpose to protest social stigmas. Im a confident and strong minded person, but that doesn't mean i don't have doubts about things.
I find geek or nerd are terms too general to fully explain what someone is like but its better than nothing i guess.

I am a geek in so many ways, that I'd wear my keyboard out trying to explain it.....
Saying that though, being a geek isn't all bad.....
And I had a collection of those Ian Livingstone books, I was rather fond of the space one myself.....(Starship Traveller)

Yeah, I reckon handling all those lead figures made me the way I am today.......

That's a good point! I knew there had to be a reason for it! |
I don't know what you mean.......

I love geeks. As longs as you're funny and are a great person, what does it matter? Maybe a wee bit of a generalisation; but I would say most geeks are also good at helping you with your PC problems. I demand an increase in the number of geeks in the UK and think they should have their own forum.

I don't mind being called a geek by fellow geeks, but it gets my back up a little when I get labelled a geek by a non geek! Make any sense? I guess it's because the only person who falls into the latter type is my boss and it's normally used derogatorily when he's showing guests about.
My credentials? I'm in and got a degree in engineering, I code in Python, I've a number of linux machines, I always choose open office over M$ office, I'm off to a python conference in Birmingham soon (uber geek meet last year!), and I'm begining to screw around with Robot projects. I want a spider 'bot!
I have to balance the geek in me with a suitable number of saddle hours, learning my guitar, and rock gigs whenever I can...

From my understanding - which is prolly wrong - a geek is a computer anorak, and a nerd is just a, well, moron - perhaps intelligent in some sad way but cant hold a conversation with a chimp or punch his way out of a wet paper bag?
06.08.2008, 00:54 quote
If he knows alot about any particular topic, he's an anorak. If he knows little about everything, and lots about nothing, then a nerd maybe? But he's your friend, you like him so maybe he's just a nice generic geeky anorak?

Sounds great. Do you programme for certain things? Examples being some Youtube videos - one robot that walks like say a deer and when falling calculates how to put itself upright. It's amazing stuff, but very loud. |
For work I'm sorting out code to run machines but not on the real time side of things, more along the lines of creating lists of instructions for a manufacturing machine. Similar to creating a set of instructions for a computer controlled milling machine.
...as for the bots it's just something I've always been interested in and I finally found some computer/sensor/servo interface stuff that doesn't cost crazy money so have only just started on that side of things. Having to learn C for it too. I now realise how good I've had it with writing in python so far!
