The word 'random' seems heavily overused. Has anyone else noticed? It seems to be the word of choice among kids from about 14 on, but I'm wondering at what age people stop using it to describe their every action??? 25? I remember thinking it was original when I was about 17 and dismissing it as clichéd while I was still in the sixth form. It's a handy tool if you wana get teenagers to piss off though - just announce 'that's well random Dave!' (one is always called Dave, even if it's a group of girls) and they'll smile, nod, maybe spit on a wall, and leave you alone.

Not sure whether this is a rant, but it's getting tedious hearing everything labelled as random.

I always found the "trendy word brigade" quite tedious. The latest one i see and hear used a lot is "epic". Suddenly everything is described as being epic, even if it was a quick trip to the loo or something equally as mundane. It doesn't seem to matter if it was actually epic, it just seems to be kudos amongst those who use it like that to use it as much as possible. I find it all rather bizarre really. Confused

.....but if I use 'random' it's because that's what I mean.... it doesn't have a quick substitute word or am I missing the point 'cos I'm too old as well as Jegs?

'random' and 'epic' are so yesterday. I suggest combining the two into a new, fresh, kick-ass word:

rapic

Sue, it's not about the word per se, it's about the overuse of the word. A bit like the way people tend to end statements with 'so'.

I reckon this thread is really just a honey pot for grumpy old sods. So....

I think one could put up with the odd random, used randomly. And epic is OK, if it's something more than a quick trip to the loo.
Maybe a trip to Tescos or even as far as Sainsburys.
(But not Morrisons.)
One feels, almost instinctively, that rapic will make a rapid, rapic takeoff and become today's word for yesterday's tired, old random epic.
Actually the one that grates most with one is 'actually'. It has got a place in the English language, but that place is about 200kms from the nearest sentence.
And anyone using it should get only one kudo.
Or maybe just a ku and no do.

I get so mad with my own use of
*actually
*really
*just
*oh well!

Oh well! It's just that I actually really seem to use them so much and I wished I didn't. Confused Rapic sounds fun... how do we use it?

Probably. But have you been on public transport recently? The kids are more cheeky, the drunks are more pissed, everyone is more miserable, and the buses are smaller...which is probably the worse thing. Not the most enjoyable journey in the world Surprised [/quote]

I don't drive, so I will always expect to be using the buses and trains. I have just been to Essex and London travelling around a bit on public transport but I don't have to like it and it's harder to avoid 'bad times' 'cos there's school kids and drunks on buses any time of day or night.
