Not sure if its been done but here is a thread for all those useless meaningless facts and statistics we all have sqirreled away in our heads.

More people die fishing (as in everyday fishing) than boxing or motor racing.

Anyone else?

Well I can believe that 'cos I used to go out to sea on a small fishing boat and after one day when a freak wave almost drowned us the fisherman told me he couldn't even swim

When you open a door in a plane flying at 30,000 feet, you are not sucked out of it, you are blown out.

its about the nuances of imperial measurements... feathers are weighed using avoirdupois system, ie 16 ounces to the pound, gold uses the troy system which only has 12. Thus in proper metric a pound of gold is about 373 grams but a pound of feathers is more like 453 :S so yeah... clever and sarcastic in one tbh... thats me all over Razz

Is that cos it's a very boring sport? Razz

And the fisherman thinks, 'Oh, God, this is worse than dying!'
Followed immediately by the logically, 'But how do I know that?'
And then the empirical continuation, 'Let's try both!'
And that's the way they find 'em...
With a beatific smile on their face, as if they've discovered some special secret.
And the family and friends all say...
'But he died so happy... Doing something he loved...'

Only kidding, OK!
The reason might be that it's such a popular activity and fishermen spend comparatively longer time fishing than boxers spend in the ring, or racing drivers on the track.

A Boeing 747s wingspan is longer than the Wright brother's first flight.

Somehow, even though they have a population of about 305,000,000 over 1 billion people in the United States catch the common cold each year. Don't ask me how either...

over 1 billion instances of the common cold, not people. 1 person getting it 5 times in a year is counted as 5 instances.

I remember that my friend worked in a petrol station for 4 years and never caught a cold in all that time. The first cold he ever caught was just three weeks after he quit. I wonder if the constant petrol fumes had something to do with it.

In York, excluding Sundays, it is legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow.
