May I suggest you trundle up here when Whitby has one of it's Goth Fests? I'm pretty sure that you'll soon find that some of these 'loosers' (sic) are often the most tolerant, witty and intelligent folk you can come by.
As for the music, I never gave it much thought, I just know that a lot of my Goth mates listened to some cool stuff, some stuff that was a bit dark for me and one was very much into Kate Bush.

As for Indie Rock, Franz Ferdinand is awesome! theres a new band from Canada called Stars, which is our Indie! As for Gothic I thought might add etherial, ambient music as well. Love Spirals Downwards, Perfume Tree, Delerium, Lycia, Mira,Faith and the Muse and Kate Bush

If your reasearching the origins of Gothic music you might like to get hold of a copy of 'The Dark Reign of Gothic Rock' by Dave Thompson (ISDN 1-900924-48-x_ - I'm sure your local library could order it.
Just one question, why can't Goth be violent?

It would be very hard to say that, goth was born from the punk movement, and you would be very hard pressed to say that they weren't violent.

| Cool, death metal is death metal for a reason.
Originally it was a musical movement that came out of the ashes of punk (some will say punk never died, but that's a different topic...). This seriously predates 'death metal' (or doom metal or thrash metal for that matter). I think it is a lot about using music and lyrics to create an atmosphere, usually leaning towards the dark (usually emotions of not having, not being able to achieve or general decay). Just for the record i consider the following to be goth bands: Bauhaus Sisters Of Mercy Siouxsie and the Banshees The Cure Fields of the Nephilem The Mission Joy Division Cocteau Twins Boaderline goth bands: Jesus and Mary Chain Nick Cave Mazza Manson (am seriously on the fence about this, but his cover of sweet dreams does sway me a lot) I think you can see why I mention my age as colouring my judgement on what goth music is. It appears (to me) that there is a tribe of kiddie goths (you'll spot them around notts easily) which is comprised of all 'heavier' music types (heavy, death, doom, speed, thrash and black metal, indutrial, 'indie') without really looking at what the label means historically - personally I think they have just followed a US based lead and have not used their critical facilites to determine what they truely are. The old adage holds that is someone describes themselves as 'goth' then they are not (any true 'goth' would distain any label, being an individual and all Wx |
