Just wondering your definition.

I know there is a current 'youth' sub group that call themselves goth; I don't mean that. I am interested in what YOU consider goth music.

Well. This is an interesting one.

Most teenagers will tell you the following:
Evanescence
Linkin Park
Lacuna Coil
Cradle of filth..

I guess you get the idea on those, right?

I personally don't class ANY of them as 'goth'

Here's what I'd class as 'goth'
Cannibal Corpse
Trivium
Killswitch engage
Lamb of god
Dimmu Borgir
Alice in chains
A fire inside (some may disagree here)
The Cure
Alice in chains
Siouxsie and the Banshees

But maybe I have no idea at all. Embarassed

The obvious question is why do you consider them goth? (and are alice in chains twice as goth as everyone else?)

Of that list I would consider two as goth (nope I am not making a gothier than thou judgement), but I think my age has a lot to do with what I consider goth.

The music is 'dark' and they are pretty 'dark' lyrics.

It doesn't take death metal or whatever to be goth. Just the dark lyrics. Anybody can put on a lot of eyeliner and call themselves goth without listening to any of them..which pisses me off!

I think everybody has different opinions on what 'goth' is. I personally think it's all about the music and the lyrics.

Cool, death metal is death metal for a reason.
Originally it was a musical movement that came out of the ashes of punk (some will say punk never died, but that's a different topic...). This seriously predates 'death metal' (or doom metal or thrash metal for that matter).

I think it is a lot about using music and lyrics to create an atmosphere, usually leaning towards the dark (usually emotions of not having, not being able to achieve or general decay).

Just for the record i consider the following to be goth bands:
Bauhaus
Sisters Of Mercy
Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Cure
Fields of the Nephilem
The Mission
Joy Division
Cocteau Twins

Boaderline goth bands:
Jesus and Mary Chain
Nick Cave
Mazza Manson (am seriously on the fence about this, but his cover of sweet dreams does sway me a lot)

I think you can see why I mention my age as colouring my judgement on what goth music is.

It appears (to me) that there is a tribe of kiddie goths (you'll spot them around notts easily) which is comprised of all 'heavier' music types (heavy, death, doom, speed, thrash and black metal, indutrial, 'indie') without really looking at what the label means historically - personally I think they have just followed a US based lead and have not used their critical facilites to determine what they truely are.

The old adage holds that is someone describes themselves as 'goth' then they are not (any true 'goth' would distain any label, being an individual and all Wink)

I would pretty much agree with you(and also add my selection!)

Oh god..the kiddie goths make me want to poke out my eyes & cut off my ears - Repeatedly.

As for the 'labels' flying around that people say they are...it's a load of bull.

Someone tried to call me a goth yesterday(in the pub..england game.) and I was like..I'm not a goth.

So this guy went on to ask 'what are you'..Truth is, I don't know!

Sounds like you're on the slippery slope to being a goth, erm I mean individual...

It appears there ae two tribes at the minute, goths and chavs. No different to mods and rockers really.

I was a goth when I was like 16(and not one of those: omg I wear black, with a lot of eyeliner and stuff & listen to linkin park goths, either)

I'd much rather be a goth than a chav, though!

individual surely?

I am individual, i guess.

A lot of people say that, but really they aren't. They just follow whichever shitty little trend is going off. Like these 'emo' people..what the hell.

CUT YOUR HAIR. WEAR JEANS THAT FIT. YOU ARE not AN INDIVIDUAL.

/rant.

lol.

Someone once said that the ultimate individual was one that totally conformed to societies norms...

So EMO kids are the new indie kids ?

Such internalised anger, have you not thought that you would be doing the world a favour by applying napalm to them (like salt and slugs)?

1.linkin park are not goth!!
2. the cure are not goth!!
but that my opinion.
and atm the big sub group is EMO with is kinda hard to explain on the internet easyer to point one out but yes there music is a tiny lil bit gothic but i wouldent call it goth. trvium are a big emo band when it was just a heavy rock band!! but lets not get on to emos coz this topic is about gothic music. in my eyes gothic music is marylin manson, ozzy ozborn. but music is full of opinions and every ones opinion to me counts.

The Cure ARE goth. (I had this argument with another person earlier in a music shop, funnily enough!)
For me, it's about the lyrics when it comes to goth. The cure have some of the darkest lyrics.

Manson? ...a lot of the teeny bopper goths base themselves on him. I consider him as poser goth, rather than anything else.

I agree, Linkin park are more chav*shudders* than goth.
