anyone seen it? I think it's hilarious. Strangely enough, I had a similar idea with a friend of mine years ago when I lived in Dubai. We thought it would be hilarious to send 2 typical british women out travelling the world... anyway... too late, someone got there first!

This is the one with Carl Pilkington in? I don't think he's a typical British person - I can't but help think he's an actor, but at the same time it's funny/strange that I want to think he's real aswell. He's claimed to be the creator of the show, but yet he's at the mercy of Gervais and Merchant as the village idiot they've adopted and sent abroad. They say "it's more real than most documentaries you see on TV - we don't plan it, he dosent know what is going to happen" But methinks it's more like Borat or jazz(!?) in the way it works, where there there are certain situations which are strictly planned - and the points inbetween are improvised - and repsonses from the public reveal some kinda truth to Carl/Borats naiveity, misconceptions, predjudices or maverick thoughts - which both 'them and us' do have ourselves in some shape or form.

When I was in Italy - I said to somebody "Is it true that men hold hands whilst out walking, in the North - like as a sign of friendship?" (I was in the south)

I knew it was some country where that was the case, Iran maybe. It's funny beacause it sounds quite charming or progressive in some way so he couldn't take offence really or get annoyed, and I've said how much I like Italy. They probably heard too themselves that in some countries that maybe the case - but arnt too sure also. People just dont want it to be their country! Or even in the of areas or their country they may have themselves have some funny ideas about. "I thought it was Italy - I mean only the in the north...oh there's somewhere were it's okay for straight men to hold hands." He thought for a while, "maybe it could be Greece??" Laughing

Erm ok, that was epic!

I understand that he is acting but I think you're supposed to ignore that fact and get into the character, which is pretty funny really and interesting as you get to see a bit of the world - I wish I could have his job!

I believe it's Syria, though it might be all Arabic countries. I saw a Dom Joly thing, where he went back there to visit the places he had as a child and him and one of his friends were holding hands as they walked along. With there being a law against homosexuality in Syria I would think that if it were to be seen as anything else they'd have been arrested.

Back to the original point of the thread I normally love anything that Merchant and Gervais have a hand in, but I haven't got to see any of this yet. I will be partaking in it as soon as I possibly can though.

To paraphrase Little Britain: It's like the only not gay but comfortable male friends country in the world!

....I suspect it might be most Islamic countries Wink

I have copies of the Ricky Gervais radio show from XFM back in 2003. Thats where Pilkington appears as a sound engineer/"producer". He was effectively preyed upon by Gervais and Merchant and the results are hilarious. If you havent seen the animated version I can highly recommend them for a good example of his "idiocy" I guess youtube may have them.

After the incident with an idiot and a knife in Teneriefe recently, I think Wales is a safer bet for people with their heads still screwed on...
