There is the reduced rate, which is 5%, but its been a while since I looked at what sort of products came under which classification.

I remember that cakes come under one classification and biscuits another, which is why there was an issue as to which Jaffa Cakes were classified under, and so which rate McVities had to charge.

That was a VAT or not issue and Jaffa Cakes won, much like Pringles did recently.

Fairly sure condoms got put on the 5% rate not all that long ago, but that the government wasn't allowed to zero rate it again due to the EU.

Well exempt is still a classification of VAT Razz

Thats the thing that irks me about the whole thing...because we signed up to be governed by Brussels, our own government (run by a Scot who nobody voted for) can't do exactly what it pleases within its own borders.

I would say 'pedant', but I started it with my comment to CM.

And I suppose I better say summat about VAT, well I can get vat knocked off certain items if they relate to my registered chronic disability (one being the memory foam mattress that I bought before finding this out!) but only certain shops and websites advertise the fact/offer it.
I have yet to meet a person with a disability who was aware of this fact, so it seems to me no one wants anyone to know about it. Confused

As for vat going down, I would imagine most companies will simply up the price so the price to the consumer stays the same.
Like Carrie said, 2p off a Wii....I mean....like, Wow, thats generous of them, lets all rush out and get one while they are so cheap..... Rolling Eyes

I wouldn't trust Carrie's maths on this subject unless the Wii is only £1 in which case I might go and get one whilst it's so cheap.

Looking at the GAME website, the price of a Wii seems to have coming down but as ever you have to shop around.

I'm probably going to first buy a couple of role-playing books (Mongoose's new Traveller series) to support my local gaming shop. If I am going to spend to help maintain the economy I'd better start with the businesses that I'd be most loathe to loose.

Of course books aren't subject to VAT, unless they are sold in a box, I believe!

it really isnt going to make a lot of difference and businesses claim their vat back anyway like my dad, sole trader, self employed, claims vat back on almost everything he can every year!

he said its not going to make any difference to anyone considering that in a years time they are shoving vat up to 18% or something which is higher than it was to start with anyway

Thanks Alice....the point I was making was that people were saying Amazon were doing it already and politegorilla was saying he would go and get a wii now with the vat decrease. My point was no dont because the vat hasdt been changed on that item and that item alone so thanks cmiso but my maths was just fine when i posted although i now see its down to £169.99 on Mazon. £10 saving from when i bought mine last year

What ebay has done is if you are a seller they charge a fee when you sell an item and that incorporates the new 15% vat.
Not sure about amazon as I've never tried to sell anything on there.

I'm also interested in what Andrew said about the company buying in products @ 17.5% and having to sell it at 15% vat.
I wonder how that works?

Apparently that idea of a VAT increase was published by the government by mistake and is no longer on the table.

However the principle behind this "Brownite" rescue is pretty much the same. Stop banks (and therefore capitalism) collapsing by going into debt now and repay it all via tax when money starts moving again.

Our part of the deal is to keep spending at the places we want to surivive. The VAT decrease is there to encourage people with money to spend some so less people will be made redundant.

This is the model the rest of the world seems to be adopting as well, except that George Bush's people allowed a bank to go bankrupt - making things even worse - but America is now back on plan.

Their prices are pretty changeable atm it was £166 and some odd pence when I looked yesterday.

Had an email from one shop saying they aren't passing the VAT decrease on. So won't be shopping there.
