Home >> World-issues >> Prisoners to work on building sites

Has he asked what employers and the workers views on this are?
Totally unworkable.
19.09.2008, 09:11 quote
Prisoners already do work inside prisons and used to sent to do work outside the prison as well years ago. I think it is a good idea as it helps to give prisoners something to do. Anyone who has been to prison will tell you that the worst thing about it is being stuck in a cell for hours on end with nothing to do. The prison reform trust supports training and occupational activities for prisoners too.

I've laboured on some pretty tough building sites in London and I found most of the other labourers to be a load of nut jobs anyway. It can be extremely hard work, very long hours and some times quite dangerous too. I think it would certainly keep them busy.

The link won't work for me, but I can guess at what it says.
It's been done before and it is doable to a point, but as you say what do the employers and workers think?
You would have to have a site predominantly comprised of prisoners and guards with a site manager or two making sure everything is going smoothly construction-wise.
And which prisoners would be chosen for this? There will be an abundance of items on a building site that can be used as a weapon. The guards have a responsibility to ensure the safety of the prisoners, they would be in the shit if one prisoner decided to cleave another prisoner's head in with a spade or anyone else for that matter. Not to mention if they decided enforce to cause a problem. As U4ric said building sites are dangerous places at the best of times.
Like I said it is doable, but it would have to be the most vetted prisoners who do it and considering the amount that are inside for violence against the person, the numbers that would be allowed on site would be too small to make a difference.
Not to mention the amount of training that would need to be provided for prisoners and guards.
As well as the loss of work and earnings for others.
Right. I'm done.
For now.
19.09.2008, 12:18 quote
Well of course it wouldn't be right for all prisoners but there are enough that are inside for minor offences and as all our prisons are so over crowded I'm sure it would ease the daytime pressure a bit.
As for training, none is needed. I never had any.

It's not a question as to whether training is needed. This is a building site. The last thing the government need is for a guard or prisoner to be injured or killed. Unless it's from being trained to death.
More than likely none of them will be allowed to go on because it is too dangerous. Did anyone see the two-part Casualty on BBC1? OUCH!
19.09.2008, 12:44 quote
Surely it shouldn't be about alleviating over-crowding in prisons (unless they sleep at night on said building site) or the prisoners' welfare.
They are inside to be punished for crimes committed, yes of course 'rehabilitation' is important but not at the expense of all the poor *innocent* buggers on the outside who can't get a job!!
Unemployment is high enough.
If someone seriously thinks there are employment opportunities - available jobs - on building sites, give the jobs AND the training to the people in the dole queue!
I think prisons here should take a leaf out of Joe Arpaio's book (without the wasteful lawsuits of course).

You are then talking about general laboring, gophers.
Architects, plumbers, roofers, carpenters, masons etc. generally go to college and get certificates to show they are competent, and trained, to do their jobs.
Otherwise they are known as "cowboys" which is one of the reasons why some people end up in prison.
("What you in for, mate?"
"I installed a dodgy lift that fell and maimed a few people."
"You'll do. Go install a lift on this building site at her majesty's pleasure" - yeah, I can see that working....!)

Here here!
19.09.2008, 14:11 quote
Yeah of course i'm talking about labouring. I think I would rather be in prison than do some of the labouring jobs I have been on. Although the work is brainless its also extremely tough and most unemployed people can't do it. Most of the jobs I was on were filled with illegal immigrants.

Why?
19.09.2008, 15:17 quote
Well actually most employed people wouldn't be able to do it either. Reason is because its extremely tough work. This isn't official but I would take an experienced guess and say labouring can be one of the toughest and most dangerous jobs in this country. Main reason I don't do it any more.
