First of all I'll just say that this country is not largely pagan despite its roots being such. Digging into the history books doesn't really help, as taking that view means that in theory no country is mainly Christian, Islamic or anything else if you dig far enough.

As for having a default religion, if we didn't have one I suspect most people would not take up a religion. People in the UK are largely driven by materialism, leisure and freedom. Religion tends to be at odds with each of those, particularly freedom. The basis of a lot of religions is that someone else has done the thinking and written it down so you dont have to think for yourself. Modern society has encouraged logic, science and reason. Religions tend to be based on traditions, visions, personal whims and archaic political motives. This is why many religions struggle to be unified over fundamental points.

Religion is of course the opiate of the people

Well at least someone gets it...

And if you're going on the majority argument, this country is largely non-Christian, and even of the Christians I believe there are more Catholics than Anglicans (correct me if I am wrong).

Purplebunny, I am sorry you havent learned much about real satanism!!!
One has to believe in God in order to believe in Satan as Satan is a Christian character, God's enemy. A true satanist believes that Power from Satan is better than Power through God's will.
Real satanists still sacrifice animals and virginal women etc. (through rape and other physical abuses) and call on Satan to do harm to others to get their own way.
How is that harmless?
(and yes I do know this to be true from first hand experience, but am not at liberty to say how or why)
And, how on earth is someone to choose their own spiritual path if all religions are banned?
Or do you mean, one may only choose a spiritual path as long as it is not a pre-defined religion?
Why should it not be possible for someone to learn about a pre-defined religion and decide that is their true path?

Satanism - depends on your perspective to an extent. Hardcore Christians may deem anything non-Christian as satanic. What RG says is also true.

As for banning religion - forget it. One of the fundamentals of communism is to do away with religion. Fine, but it tends to cause cavitation in society where people yearn for a spiritual meaning to life. Underground religious organisations spring up and eventually you are back to where you were. Besides, if religions are relatively harmless, then why ban them? Also, look at the hoo-ha in france with their secular schooling system that does not allow any religious icons, jewellery etc in school. Or on home turf where BA kicked up because of their employee wearing a cross. Unnecessary fuss.

I suggest that we present people with the facts, give them a choice and let them get on with it. Religion will not go away, however much you dislike it
