CHICAGO (June 10) - U.S. officials hunted for the source of a salmonella outbreak in 16 states linked to three types of raw tomatoes, while the list of supermarkets and restaurants yanking those varieties from shelves and dishes grew.

Most probably but not necassarily at place of purchase. Certain strains of salmonella can be carried by rodents and certain reptiles (eg iguana's) so the contamination could have occured at source.
