Aye, well, you know.......I reserve my snobby online persona specially for here, to give people something to whinge about Very Happy The online persona I use elsewhere would have got me banned here ages ago.

I'm not articulate enough to have more then one persona.............

Nor am I. I just stop taking my medication

I just thought of something else to do with the original point (lol), as I just noticed someone online right now that made me think of something. I hope she won't mind me using her as an example in this.

Say, for example, someone really detests text speak, the use of lol, smilies and so on. Say, for example some really hot woman turns up on the forum, someone who you find really attractive and have lots of things in common with, but she uses lol in her profile a lot. Now, I'm wondering - if the person who detests such things as lol and smilies has an interest in the woman anyway, I wonder if they put their intense dislike for such things to one side, or not?

Incidentally, having just spent a while going through some old posts here, it is worth noting that some of the most articulate members on the forum make ample use of smileys in their posts, as a form of expression. It also occurred to me that lot of smiley usage here is relative to the on- and off-line relationships that various members have between each other, and is often the result of personal, or long-standing onlines jokes between various members.

As previously mentioned, my own gripe is with lazy grammar and typed punctuation (15 errors in the original post of this thread), and I often feel the urge to go and correct people's posts (typos excluded), but I don't - it is how they write and express themselves, it's their business, not mine. Ditto for smiley usage.

I use smiley's a lot because in 'real life' I am very facially expressive. I can't hide my emotions at all because my face is my worst enemy. Without even realising it initially, those facial expressions have carried across online via the use of smileys. I hate to think I'd unwittingly upset someone because my words had been misread so I try to get tone across with the little emoticons.

I too hate deliberate mispelling eg text talk but as you say Stu, it's how they express themselves and up to them, not me.

That must be the smiliest smiley I have ever seen, definitely showing emotion.
(But you shouldn't post my mother's picture here!)

I use 'lol' a lot and i will defend it by saying it is an actual expression of my persona at that time; if i use 'lol' then i am actually laughing.... sadly it has been overused and i hate nothing more than someone just answering with a 'lol'; something i have never done and ends any conversation there and then.

I also use it to express a joke, if i say something that could be misread then i will use 'lol' to reinforce that im joking. Used right it can be an effective way of ensuring your text is taken in the manner it was intended; used wrong and its a show stopper!

As for grammar, ekkk, im guilty there, ... but i take comfort in that i dont abbreviate our English language

(DH please refrain from correcting my grammatical errors lol )

LOL can be a pain in the arse if it's a case that the other person cannot be botherd to talk to you.

Especily whe you make conversation and say something that isn't even funy and someone says....lol....it can kill a conversation.
