Right, I'm bored, so I've decided to start doing a Song of the Day thread. Each day I will pick a song that I think is great, and tell you why I think it's great. You can have a look/listen and then discuss the song and the band, and whatever. Could be interesting?
Today's Song of the Day:
"There There My Dear" -- by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Now then, when most people think of Dexy's Midnight Runners the first thing that comes into their head is "Come on Eileen." They had a lot of success with that song, but people who know that song only are really missing out. Dexy's were years ahead of their time, and "Come on Eileen" isn't even one of their best songs. They wrote bucketloads of absolutely stupendous Northern Soul with a difference.
"There There My Dear" is not only a fantastic song, but also quite amusing as it was written to take the piss out of pretentious uni students, and the lyrics are set out in the form of a letter to someone (lyrics at the end of the post.) This performance was in Germany in 1980 and it's one of the best performances of the song I've seen. Check out the sheer fuckin' grooviness of the horn section.. if this song doesn't get you moving, you must be dead!
There is NOTHING like this around today!
Dear Robin,
Hope you dont mind me writing, its just that there's more than one thing I
need to ask you. If you're so anti-fashion, why not wear flares, instead of
dressing down all the same? It's just that looking like that I can express
my dissatisfaction.
Dear Robin,
Let me explain, though you'd never see in a million years. Keep quoting
Cabaret, Berlin, Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, Duchamp, Beauvoir, Kerouac,
Kierkegaard, Michael Rennie. I don't believe you really like Frank Sinatra.
Dear Robin,
You're always so happy, how the hell do you get your inspiration? You're
like a dumb patriot. If you're supposed to be so angry, why don't you fight
and let me benefit from your right? Don't you know the only way to change
things is to shoot men who arrange things?
Dear Robin,
Well, youve made your rules, but we don't know that game, perhaps I'd listen to your records but your logic's far too lame, and I'd only waste three valuable minutes of my life with your insincerity.
You see Robin, I'm just searching for the young soul rebels, and I can't
find them anywhere. Where have you hidden them?
Maybe you should welcome the new soul vision.
Absolutely BLOODY BRILLIANT.

The video seems to be sticking a bit, a pain that, but I can assure everyone it IS worth perservering and loading the whole thing so you can listen to it all the way through without interruptions.

Another thing I liked about Dexy's in the early days (like in this video, is a very early line up) is that they had a marvellous image, with the donkey jackets or leather jackets and the woolly hats etc. A bit later on when they switched to wearing all the divvy dungarees and stuff, they didn't look as good IMO.

can we add to the thread Moose or is it just a mooses song of the day thread?
11.03.2008, 10:59 quote
Just let it play through once, turn your volume down and open another tab and do something for five mins, turn your volume back up, switch tabs and enjoy without any breaks in it ! It just needs to load the whole thing first .... patience, patience
