Home >> Music >> Ska - Why listen to the 2nd but not the 3rd?
09.10.2009, 16:51 quote
Before I start this thread I should definately describe ska (many may think "pfft people know what ska is, well you'd be suprised these days.)
Ska is a form of music that originated in jamaica by artists like desmond dekker and prince buster. It came before reggae and shares many similarities but generally a bit faster.
Anyway ska bands from the 2nd wave of ska still remain popular to this day (madness, the specials etc) however most people couldnt name a single 3rd wave ska band (streetlight manifesto, reel big fish, big d and the kids table etc).
So the question to those who havent checked them but like 2nd wave ska. Why havent you checked them? Do you know of their existance?

I know Reel Big Fish, and they're ok if I'm in the mood. I do admit to being a big fan of Madness, and the Specials. The Clash did Ska well too.
But with music, like anything, tastes change. The bands that you mentioned just aren't as popular as people like Jordin Sparks or Chris Brown, their circulation is going to be lower, so less people will hear of them, and less people will listen. The people that like Madness and The Specials are the people that were listening to the radio when they were popular (for the most part.)
As well as that, besides being classified as Ska, Madness and the Specials are very different from Reel Big Fish. With Reel Big Fish it's much more an American teen sound, like Greenday, Sum41 or Blink 182 with brass. I don't think many fans of the second wave will be that interested.

well raven I would class them as 2nd wave style, this is more similar to the likes of madness and such. And a good one at that, loving the beat.
for whysoserious. Kinda proving my point when you only know one of the bands. I can see the connection between say reel big fish and green day, but have you considered giving streetlight manifesto a try? You'd be pleasently suprised.

I like most of the second wave stuff but third wave is where its at. I love the small venues. Some of my favs are Mad Caddies, Less then Jake and of Course Big D... LAX is the best song. More people should like ska it always makes me happy.
