Given that no band decided to call themselves goth and it was a label applied by the music press we have to accept that the cure are goth...

hahah I say screw music stereotyping genres, and putting them into box's. music is to set you free from such things.

I never said it was a good show, but it was an enjoyable enough diversion.

When it all started in the mid 80's it was band such as these that created the goth movement .the mission sisters of mercy , Feilds of the nephilim Bauhause, virgin prunes ,Siouxsie And The Banshees and many of the members of these bands become other bands as they do now but the ones listed were the most influental of the early gothic movement Also bands like kraftwork , As for bands now calling them selves goth well times change music evolves . But the goth movement of the 80's Also had its roots in punk .

My definition of goth is the mid eighties dark morbid pop craze. Its golden era is the mid eighties. The top goth bands from the heyday of gothic music which was the mid 1980s were The Misson, The Cult, Lords Of The New Church and The Cure. The Damned and Siouxise and The Banshees both had a gothic style and sound too from the early 1980s onwards and pickup a massive goth following after abandoming their prievous punk sound of the late seventies.

i think to be a goth is to stand out, at least now adays. originaly goths where a germanic tribe and helped to defeat the romans, they enjoyed wine and meat as far as i know.

i think alot of people try to be different but fail becomeing the same as most of the others trying to be different thus creating a group of wannabe goths.

as for music i would say cradle of filth are gothic, so are wendsday 13, marilin manson. why?? because they dont care what they look like and change to how they see fit. maybe im wrong. its easy to say your a goth if the person has long hair and its dark and are white. seems abit silly realy

i dispute the cult being goth in any way. a good place to check out the popular definitions of things is last.fm

for instance the top10 gothic tagged artists are:

Evanescence
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Lacuna Coil
The Sisters of Mercy
Lacrimosa
Bauhaus
Dead Can Dance
L'Âme Immortelle
Joy Division

goth rock apparently is

Bauhaus
The Sisters of Mercy
The Cure
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Fields of the Nephilim
The Mission
HiM
Christian Death
Evanescence
The 69 Eyes

Have to agree browolf , but saying that music media changing its mind so often as what groups belong in what genre quicker than bernard manning swares on stage . Kerrang metal hammer NME and other music presses like to place music in nice neat boxes with so many artists all trying new things and new musical styles , music will always evolve so will those artists .
