I’ve always been one to ignore trends :- )
Gov’t Mule
Gov’t Mule were largely unknown in the UK until ex-Black Crowes bassist Andy Hess joined the original line-up after the death of Allen Woody. I think the real popularity of band can be judged on what other bands think of a particular band. A few years ago every major band was polled on who their favourite band was, and the end result was Gov’t Mule. Testament to this bands popularity amongst their musical peers is that when Allen Woody passed away the remaining 2 members were inundated with requests from internationally acclaimed bassists from every major band to join them in a memorial tour. The 2 resulting double live albums (The Deep End – Volume 1 & 2) included (on bass, amongst others) Jack Bruce, Flea, Roger Glover, Les Claypool, Jason Newstead, Dave Schools, Bootsy Collins.
I rest my case :- ) Oh, for anyone interested in the band, there are a few reviews and articles on one of my (woefully out of date) music review web sites at http://www.musicworkz.co.uk/reviews2.php?id=56 (can I post links like this? I think so, I'm not advertisng or selling anything).
But the best band ever votes will always depend on personal music genre preferences, so I’ll add my own personal choice to Gov’t Mule
Alabama 3
Nick Cave (and anything that Warren Ellis is involved with)
The Cruel Sea
Oh, and for sheer ingenuity, Frank Zappa

The best band ever has got to be Level 42. Who can forget such classics as Kansas City Milkman and Out of Sight, Out of Mind?
Music is a personal thing so people will never agree on who is the best band or artist but my 5 top artists are;
Nirvana - Introduced the world to Grunge and without Dave Ghrol there would be no Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stoneage would still be unheard of.
Pink Floyd - forget Lennon and McCartney (George Harrison wrote the greatest Beatles song anyway - Something) Gilmour and Walters wrote some stunners.
Radiohead - They are just in a different league
Muse - In the same league as Radiohead
Seal - forget Barry White, what Seal can't do with a heart aint worth doing!
Maybe we should try best bands of the decade - now that should be interesting!

You may. Although I would have waited to hear if the 2nd album will be as good as the first.
