I notice Jeff Buckley didn't get a mention! Or Smashing Pumpkins! (Although word on the street is they're back together, so happy days...) But yeah, like everyone else, Nirvana and The Doors

Yeah, I was going to say the pumpkins, but as you say they are supposedly getting back together and are recording an album now!

Without a doubt The Doors, Hendrix and Faith No More. Probably loads more I can't think of just now...

Green Day before they were famous when they still played small venues. They are a great band but unfortunatly you cannot get anything like the same atomosphere in the massive venues they play now. Even a medium sized venue is bad for a punk gig. I saw the Damned for instance in the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent in 1985, and although they played good, the gig was too big and impersonal.

The music business is a cold hard place we're good men die like dogs in hotels and that's the good side.

My problem is would you of really appreciated these great bands from the past at that particular point in time? You know a lot of these bands at their height (musically not fame-wise) we're not very well respected in terms of musicianship and all that lad-de-dah. It's only now and in recent times (apart from a few exceptions) they have got recognition for what they have achieved -

"Death makes hero's of us all and gives us wings, we're once shoulders as smooth as Raven claws was".

Lot's of these bands which people have named are very similar and rather obvious. What happened to obscurity and originality? (just playing). You know my little brother would probably know half of these bands and he's only 14 which makes the credibility of this thread questionable.
Anyway had to get that mini-rant of my chest here's my ultimate hit-list.

Stone Roses - Although Mr Brown can't sing they influenced everything British from 1987 - 1996

Rolling Stones - Brian Jones and `Keef Richards? C'mon i can't believe nobody has got them down.

Love - LA'S finest psychedelic band ever. Arthur Lee and his band was the first multi-racial band in the world. They opened the doors for everybody to have a crack at the fame game.

Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Need i say any more?

Booker T and Taj Mahal - Great band !!

Apart from all the obvious biggies like Bob Marley, Otis Reading, Jimi Hendrix etc, I would have to add:

John Coltrane
Lewis Taylor (now retired)
Young Disciples
Chic
D influence
James Brown (original JBs line up crica 1970)
Curtis Mayfield before the accident
Emperors New Clothes (amazing 90s jazz funkers)
Mother Earth...

the list is endless. That's why I don't hesitate to see the people I love these days Smile

But since I may well be the oldest woman on site, I reckon I was born best time ever! I lived on the London pub, club, college, concert and free park performance circuits, so have seen and still love the bands of my youth. I saw Hendrix, Stones, Cream, Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett), Jeff Beck, Kinks,Who......just too many to mention.

Sadly today, it's all a bit too expensive to see so many bands play live but would love to see Muse and The Streets live. Maybe get the chance one day.
