hello all,

am a new guy here. and seeing as you people are the forum regulars thought i would just give a shot at making some friends and put the proverbial foot in the door.

first off, i'm an indian - though my travels have left me very open minded about cultures and opinions - i'm training to be a journalist - my political leanings are uncertain - my likes and dislikes are plastered over my profile and yes i do fill in all the little tabs with the truth (in this day and age? shocking isnt it? Laughing )

also - am new to messageboards or forums - methinks i deserve a wee discount on my opinions since i am a self professed noob.

lets start off on a distinctly silly yet quite relevant topic.

is it hard for people to accept an outsider as a friend?

here's my issue - i'm a decent guy - i dont look like a million (but i am not, how they say in scotland, a minger) Laughing but i make up for that in personality and (rarely) intelligence.
i am studying in a course and all of my friends here are very nice and supportive. i'd go as far to say that i have never met more friendly folk in my life.

however i get a little feeling now and then that i am not quite welcome. of the international community here i do not feel such a thing - i have friends from france, china, japan, germany, etc. we all get along fine - even though language may hinder sometimes - but we get by.

here's the side question?

how am i supposed to mesh? am i doing something wrong?

i dont mean to tick anyone off - this is for conversation's sake, yes? i'm sure you all are wonderful people and will treat me like a small, innocent animal Wink
cheers

Best thing is to chill out and be yourself, my friend...there are quite a few wankers that post here, but the board owner, in his wisdom, has identified them by naming the "mods" so just watch out for them

ps. only joking mods, youre the best

In this day & age mate it doesnt matter where you are from I think the country is finally seeing sense as far as culture is concerned, especially Oxford anyway. You may find some old fashioned people stuck in their ways but they are the easiest to ignore!

Anyway nobody discriminates on FB & if they do they have these evil(but lovely) mods to answer to like somebody already said.

You seem like a nice bloke anyway & I'm sure you will make loads of mates on here in no time...you probably already have by the time i write this!

By the way, if did want to speak to people from your own cultural background I think you can click on "Indian" or whatever on the Nationality section of any profile on which you find it (probably your own is easiest) & it should give you a list of all the indians on the site(I think). Or you could do it on megasearch.

Anyway I hope you make as many friends as you want to & dont get too addicted to the site!!!!

be yourself and don't take things too seriously...

and be nice Wink

anyone know the Clay Oven in Wembly? Big Hindu centre. I was there at a mate's wedding, she was in traditional indian wedding garb being Hindu - looked absolutely stunning! My mate - big yorkshire chappie was also in indian costume. Me, being best man was in a kilt and almost stole the show - think I raised a few eyebrows while dancing - I seem to remember spinning a lot! Was funny too having these aging indian ladies wanting a dance Embarassed

anyway back to the point - the more variety in backgrounds and opinions the better I think, so your most welcome dude, enjoy yourself Very Happy

what can i say - i like writing looong ass replies

@ cazzabee
thanks fer the answer and all i'm sure i will - FB has a cool buncha people on it - how are things up in Fife?

@mickeyoxford
yeah, i agree as well - but you always have a nonconformist where there is a common string of thought. fortunately in all my time in scotland i have yet to meet a person who has treated me different. however, there is a slight feeling of alienation which i am not sure if its my fault or really there. i dont mind getting into the culture of a place anc am pretty thankfull for the friends i made on the course for giving me a wonderful christmas dinner - traditions and all. i have no complaints - but that feeling tends to sting when it hits.

@chikhai
ta for the welcome mate. just curious, but do you do any tai chi, kung fu, kenpo? you look the part of the monk Razz

@scubawallace
am always nice Wink
have also been to those gigs - the old ladies are always looking for new grooves but the food is good.

Not a bad guess there mate (though the monk thing has been said before, I take it as a compliment), I still do a bit of Tai Chi every now and again, but nowhere near as much as I'd like to. I did Kendo for a few years and then gravitated onto fencing (not the B&Q sort), which I still do when the mood takes me. I wish I had more time for it really.

I'd love to do kendo its high up on my wishlist! Had a sword once - boy bapping each other with those things while in the protective armour must be one sure way of finding release...
