On second thoughts, my post on the previous page about smoking doesn't make a good introduction, does it?

You know, this morning I found a profile on FB of someone who, on the surface, would suit me perfectly (not that I'm looking of course ). But she went on and on and on and on and on about a non-smoker. She is not shallow at all, she just doesn't want to be with a smoker, this is one of the things on her 'list'. If anyone on this forum tells me they don't have a list that includes at least one or two 'shallow' things (i.e. personal preferences) that they absolutely will not compromise on, I shalll start a new thread called 'Pants On Fire'

[As a smoker, I think any list that includes no-smoking is a bit of a shit list, but hey, it's not my list, they can put what they like in it Laughing Oh, completely off-topic (what's new), 4 of my dates in the past year professed to be non-smokers, but when we were together they scabbeed rollups off me - non-smokers indeed, they were just too tight to buy fags ]

****************

I dont feel hurt by your comments re smoking. But I'm not shallow at all. Ive never smoked nor stopped people from smoking - its their choice - but i choose to be with a non smoker - but cant find one! lol

i suppose you could say im shallow re height too if people think im shallow re smoking versus non smoking - in that case - i am tall and choose NOT to date a short person! I went out with a guy 5'7" once but it didnt feel right - people stared when we were out - and i didnt feel comfortable with it. it looks bad when a woman is taller than a man - but ok when the man is taller.

Thanks Bex. I tell ya I'd smoke my own socks if I had to. Still maybe it could all be an incentive to give up? Smile

They could try but not sure if they'd ever win that one. I think ppl are smoking more, and all they're doing is moving it back into the house which is not good for children. I'll give it 5 yrs.

Whoops, sorry seem to be doing a DarkHorse here and hijacking the thread!!

Just a quickie* - I hope you don’t think I was being rude! I did specifically say “She is not shallow at all, she just doesn't want to be with a smoker, this is one of the things on her 'list'.” Earlier in the thread someone JOKINGLY said that lists like that are for the more shallow amongst us, and I was trying to make a serious point that everyone has a ‘list’ that includes things that not everyone will have thought of adding to their own list (indeed points that others might feel are shallow) - elsewhere I used the examples of valid list additions such as fashion, age, education, accent, race, etc, (height is also a valid one!), although most people will deny that those kind of things are on their list, because they are worried that people will think that they are shallow.

I think it’s admirable that people do put their personal preferences on their public ‘list’, it saves an awful lot of time-wasting (and needless email ping pong Laughing ).

*When have I ever done a quickie on the forum? Except the Thought of The Day.

Feel free! I'll be abandoning the forum pretty soon I think, so it would be nice to have someone willing to put themself on the line and play the superhero role. Cape and mask optional, witty sense of humour and thorough knowledge of human species and their quirks essential. Pay is minimal, but the role is rewarding.

I just think that maybe smoking isn't the issue, the issue perhaps is more one of the individual smoker's commitment to smoking as opposed ot a commitment to a relationship.

If someone doesn't like kissing an ashtray (as the saying goes), then they are hardly likely to be dating (or in a relationship with) a smoker. And if they are, then the smoking is not an issue anyway, surely?

Since I am almost certainly not going to be in a relationship with someone who found smoking abhorrent, the issue of whether I am more commited to my smoking habit than I would be to the relationship isn't likely to crop up.

My own 'list' includes looking for either a smoker (amongst other things), or someone who doesn't mind me me smoking - I am very, very shallow

Of course, all this might seem like it has nothing to do with the topic title (life partners) at all.

But it does. In a way. (.....gets his slippers and pipe out and settles down to lecture the youngsters.....)

maybe she just found me irresistable.....even though I was a smoker..... but when things got very serious, it seemed a small sacrifice to give up.

The last time someone told me that giving up smoking was a small sacrifice to make if I wanted to please her, I pointed out that I had already sacrificed my flat 450 miles away, left all my furniture and most of my belongings behind (not to mention all my friends and my little routine that I was comfortable with) to please her and that she still wasn't 'pleased'. There is a moral to this story, but I'm not quite sure what it is right now.

If you live in a small village, it is also more likely the relationship will last longer - because there is no competition. But it is unlikely to meet your partner in small village in the first place....but some do...and usually they stay together forever.

I think if you have a girlfriend that has a lot of hobbies and interests...goes out a lot...clubbing...so basically one that is quite active....and if you live in a big city......it is only a matter of time until she meets someone new/else/"better" and therefore it is unlikely it will last forever. Especially if you work a lot.....

And if you have a girlfriend that does have many interests/hobbies and does not go out a lot, it is unlikely she will meet someone else - but the problem is nobody wants to have such a boring girlfriend and you life would be boring too.

So if you want a relationship that lasts you either need a boring girlfriend in a boring village without any competition as far as other men is concerned or you need to be......the most amazing guy on earth.
