If I were a bitch, I'd be able to think of a scathing retort, but I'm not, so I can't Sad

I think you can be friends if you both realise that you were never meant to be together in the first place.

If either one of you were truly in love with the other then I think it always makes it difficult... like the one that was in love will always have hope.

What does "never meant to be together" mean??

ANY person that you broke up with isn't for you, there is no difference between people that aren't for you, and people that you aren't "meant" to be with.

Who "meant" for them not to be with us?

If you break up with them, they are exes and they weren't compatable.

Why complicate the future by staying friends with exes when it will only gernate jealousy from future mates.

First of all, the original post was three years ago, you're unlikely to get a reply.

Secondly, he point I quoted above. What if you're only ever suited to being friends, but you didn't realise that until after you started your relationship?

I never see the harm in staying friends with exes. Obviously some I'm just not suited to in any way, and we go our separate ways, but some I still talk to now, and it's never caused me any problems.

I, myself have never experienced this problem. but a verry close friend got together with an ex of my room mate and best friend from college and the friendship suffered. What hurt my best friend most was that they where together alot longer than she was with him and the relationship looked alot stronger on the outside. What was horrible for me is that i was stuck in between 2 friends.

I don't understand why people would want to, clearly desperate for friends. As long as you're friends with an ex, you haven't really moved on and neither have they. So in my opinion, when somebody says, "It's over, but we can still be friends", they're not ready for you to not be part of their life. It's actually quite selfish - when you think about it.

I don't see why you can't have moved on and yet still be friends if you are both mature and civilised and it didn't end badly.
