17.06.2007, 10:02 quote
Hi
This flirtbox with their legacy code is kind of "years ago" here's a message to the php developers of this system... put this thing offline for 1 week and redo the whole "(english language)" side... and do away with this admin apporve photos nonsense..
Best
James
Corona CA
++++++++++++
Perfect example ... even this forum... is garbage... all the text is all centered.. in all browsers... come on people... not trying to slam you... it's a very very good system, many bells and whistles... but the display is pretty bad... the main frame is 15% off the left side... in Explorer 6... why don't you move over to an engine like smarty... or drupal... it would not be that hard... and listen... your going to have to do it sometime soon... investors are not going to look at you if you dont.
++++++++++++++++
We have a php team here in California... (I am from Glasgow) that could redo this into someting really fantastic... the basic framework is there already... but it's legacy code as you know... contact at info@7hq.net if interested
also... no breadcrumbs in the forum... even i got lost
Best

People? It is just me....and I am currently refurbishing my flat....
Webdesign has nothing to do with the underlying technology. If a webdesigner has a suggestion for a better webdesign he/she could let me know...but so far no designer has had any really good ideas and I am not replacing the design just in order that it looks different - it has to look better!
If the website is offline for a week, what would be the reason to do so? A website is usually developed on a test system, not on a productive system.
About 1/3 of the daily uploaded pictures are deleted and they need to in order to avoid law suits because of pornography, copyright protection or other things...
If you use Internet Explorer, this is your own fault by the way....download Firefox from http://www.firefox.com and stop moaning about buggy Microsoft-ware.
>don't you move over to an engine like smarty... or drupal... it would not be
How do you know what engine it uses? And why do you think Smarty is a good templating engine? Why should I use Drupal? It is also PHP, and PHP is for children....
p.s.: Investors only buy things that are cheaper then they are worth...like second hand car dealers. A lot of jobs center around ripping people off by buying stuff from them and selling them for more to other people.
Investors and internet are not going well together....investors have no idea about the internet and usually didn't even know what the internet was until recently, aftere my grandpa and grandma were online for ages . Investors also tend to either underestimate or overestimate projects. They also tend to follow fashion trends....and usually are so slow that they try to follow trends that are already over or don't realize the potential of trends before it is too late again. No matter whether web 1.0 or web 2.0...now people all follow the web 2.0 hypes but as every one does that the potential is minimal again...2 years ago maybe. In my opinion, investment in websites is now too late again (even in the age of the "web 2.0" hype)....too much competition and too much expenditures on advertising....so a supermarket might be the better alternative - or Biotech GPC stocks.
Investors are suit-and-tie kind of people that masturbate over money and
the people who made the internet and most websites are run by "normal people" that are more interested in creating things...such as musicians, painters and writers....in my opinion.

I whole heartedly agree with the admin aprooving photos......I know half the piccies that people would try to put up and i am personally glad that the admin checks them all first because half those images I dont particularly want to see.

That made me laugh, too. I'd just create a dev.<domain-name> subdomain, develop on . Do a limited trial with some existing users once it was ready, and then just swap the dev. domain with the public one when ready. Taking a site offline is just plain bonkers.

Whilst I have no love for IE, I think it does makes sense to have them in mind. I'd not "fix" everything broken in IE, though. How broken is the site in IE ? ps. no, it's not on my computer, I use Linux. I can run it via wine, but don't want to.

Largely true, from what I have read and seen hyped up.
I do see a lot of room for improvement, though, because there's a lot of basic problems lying around. Some examples ?
1. Separate logins for the forum and dating side of the site.
2. Cookies not working across different domains.
3. No RSS feeds.
4. Profiles lying around that have not been used for years.
5. Not being able to remove unread messages that are really old.
6. Blocking AFAIK doesn't work properly because the messages are still there, you just can't read them, and they still get mailed to your email address if you have alerts.
7. Links that go out when a thread you've subscribed to is updated take you to the 1st page of that thread instead of the end, where the new messages are.
8. Browse photos and people in the lesbian section come up. This is probably true in reverse for women browsing.
There's a lot of other niggles too.
There are things that, in my view, need to be done. Sure they're not show stoppers, but they could very well put off some people.
Oh, I should end all this negative talk by making it clear that I'm still happy to come back
I just want to see it working even better than it does.

1. Why? The best solution would be a central ldap server or something...which would be the aim..so you need a single login for all Flirtbox websites...and it is up to you, which websites you want to use. This way it will be easier to link posts on the forum to the Flirtbox profiles page...to blogs (currently inactive) as well as to videos on Flirtbox.tv (currently inactive)
2. This is a general problem with cookies. You can only set cookies for you own domain name (from the server side point of view). The only solution would be a flirtbox.com with subdomains instead of lots of other domains (similiar to uk.answers.yahoo.com etc..)
3. Why do you need them? It is not a news website...
4. Yes....but many come back sooner or later. The answer would be to list inactive profiles last or that people can choose themselves what profiles they are shown.
5. If someone does not login until next year....the messages needs to wait until then.
6. this should have been fixed...I will check that
7. ...because it would have taken too long to do it in another way.
8. i dont understand that one.

Yes, thanks for letting me know....but I can only work on the website on weekend and in my free-time...and currently I dont have much free time....but soon again I hope.

There may be simpler solutions, but it's not a problem I've tried to solve before. I've heard of different web solutions being linked together, though, and as far as I'm aware they're not using ldap.

Is there a need for flirtbox to span so many domains ?

Feeds have more uses than that. Ones related to these forums, showing recently updated threads would be nice. Sure you can visit and check, but an RSS reader of some form is very handy, and promotes people to come back, or even just come back more frequently.
A feed that showed new people who've joined that live within a specific area would also be cool. It puts more focus on new people, which should get them more attention and give them more of a reason to come back.

OK, this might seem a bit pedantic, but I'm just trying to explain myself as clearly as I can to demonstrate what I am on about.
On flirtbox.co.uk, click on "browse pictures" in the menu on the left. On the right side, click on "dating women" to get only women showing. Browse through the photos and you will see that some of the women showing are signed up to girlsweb.co.uk and are not interested in men.

So I have heard. If there's something that's within my power to do to help, let me know. So long as it doesn't take up too much time, I'd be happy to do so. Whilst money is a nice thing, I'd not necessarily expect any. I could quite easily be motivated by just having something new or something working better
.

There's been lots said above.
Loads of detail.
I have one simple little thing to say.
Its a very small thing.
But in the world of IT it is of unfathomable importance.
And it is this.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There's too much done in this world due to people's egos. It's the 'I did this' syndrome.
'I'll make it look a bit different so people know how good I am'
to the designer/implimentor leads to -
'Balls, you just make my life fkin difficult because I have to relearn how to do everythink and it was all fine anyway'
and
'Shit its not working anymore - why did it need fixing again?'
I know sometimes things need updating/replacing, which is fine when it brings value - ie new functionality (when the old is properly lacking not just some pleb's idea of 'not quite right') or to make things more user-freindly (assuming things are currently properly flawed and causing inconvenience, and not, again, simply not conforming to someone's unrealistic ideals of perfect))
