You mentioned castles.... you'll probably shoot me down by saying you've already been.... but if you haven't, try to check out Lindisfarne Castle some time, up in Durham. The whole place is a national park now and Lindisfarne is like a proper fairytale castle, go early in the morning when the sun is coming up and the mist is rising. One of the most beautiful things you'll ever see. And while you're in the area you could go and check out Durham itself, a place that I really like, including the Cathedral which is stunning, set on the banks of the mighty River Wear.

I went to Ayr in Scotland last year.
Home of Brigadoon, birthplace of Robbie Burns, a short drive to the Falkirk Wheel (well worth seeing, a feat of engineering).
Beautiful scenery with plenty of great walks and golf courses.
It is on the West coast and catches the Gulf Stream.

I've not had a holiday for years, but I dont like hot, beach holidays - not my scene. What i'd like to do is visit somewhere with lots of history and places to visit in the UK so I can drive there, maybe spooky places, or places with good castles to explore, or high tech/science stuff, or camping 'bushcraft' type stuff....y'know, smething different (or dull, depends on your point of view i guess).....

any suggestions?

Lincoln is brilliant for a visit, it has some amazing history. In the castle is one of the few remaining copies of the original Magna Carta, there's ghost walks and a brilliant cathedral. Also the shopping is good, restaurants (at the top of the hill, on bail gate) are all first rate and it has a great night life too. One of my favourite places in the UK. I vist a few times a year.

A couple of months late, but I would recommend Liverpool to anyone who likes site seeing. It mightn't be the nicest of places, it has it's fair share of scum (what city doesn't?). But that aside there is alot of History here and excellent tours you can go on. In the city centre there is a ghost-tour that usually takes place around 19:00 - 00:00 down notorious streets that have apparently been subject to ghost sightings, as mentioned in numerous books and as seen on Most Haunted Live).

Trev, you’ve probably had the holiday by now! My suggestions:
Park yourself in Kendal, eat some mint cake and explore the Lake District and (on the other side) the Yorkshire Dales.

I know you don’t fancy driving up to Scotland, but it IS worth the trip!
The coast road (A92/A90) between Perth and Aberdeen is very interesting for historical stuff. And you can take a left turn anywhere and get lost, or find a (modern) Brigadoon.
I loved Dunnottar Castle: like a film set built especially for some Hollywood blockbuster, with Mel Gibson pouring boiling tar down on the (English) invaders. Except, of course, it’s been there 100s of years. Stand in the Whig’s Vault, look out thru the bars to the sea, and listen to the cries of the gulls merging with the people who lived and died there. It’s spookily spooky. You can go searching for the spirit of the green lady and her lost children.

Cheadle Heath Police Station is allegedly an interesting place to visit. It's a brand new facility with lower ceilings, aesthetic exterior design and soft pastel interior decor to soothe the mood. I think they offer free room and board, especially if you agree to come quietly and not bang the cell-bed headboard against the wall of the adjoining cell.
