Right, I am off work next week and rather than just sit about wasting my week off I'm thinking about heading for the hills on my own for 2 - 3 days with my trusty tent and doing a bit of walking, sight seeing and of course drinking.

The problem is I'm having trouble coming up with ideas for somewhere to go.. frankly I can't be arsed to drive for hours and hours, so somewhere within a couple of hours of the London area would be good. I've travelled around the country shitloads over the years so if you name a place it's a safe bet I've already been there (or near).. but it doesn't matter about that, I'm just looking for a few suggestions.

So far I'm considering the Lake District (been there before and it's farther than I want to go really), the New Forest (been before and it's not all that great), and the Brecon Beacons (one place I haven't yet been but it's further than I really wanted to go.)

I'm leaning towards the Brecon Beacons at the moment purely because it's meant to be great and I haven't been....

Any suggestions..

Edale.

Anywhere around Hope, Hope Valley, Castleton would be nice. There a re a couple of nice campsites between Castleton and Hope Valley, easy access to stunning walks and cultural sights too. Might be a bit further than you want to go though.

And you could easily pop into Manchester for the obligatory piss up Smile

BTW the reason I'm looking for somewhere that's not too much of a long drive, is that I'm just planning on a 2 - 3 day trip, not the entire week. So I don't want to spend loads of that time on the travelling. The rest of the week I've other bits and pieces to do.

I'll vouch for the peak district as well but I'd suggest the Three Peaks in North Yorkshire ...Limestone country...theres an excellent camping site (basic but rustic I'd describe it as) in Horton in Ribblesdale, you could walk the three peaks its only 25 miles round trip and the scenery is something not to be missed.

Have a look at Rutland. Its only 2 hours from London and is a lovely part of the country. I know there is a nice camping place in a little village called Wing that has a rather nice boozer fifty yards away.
