Maybe it's time to archive some of the older posts/topics?

Why?
If they're still here running it's because they're popular and people are keeping them alive.
May be it's more a question of users creating new threads.

Oh ok, so do you mean there's too many topics getting in the way when you're looking for something so they should be organised better?

Well, I've not been searching for any topics specifically, merely browsing.

I do agree that under some headings there's a large number of topic threads which haven't had posts for a long time, and so may be they could be better organised.

Just seemed a little over-whelming in an "information overload" kind of way.

I guess you're right..... and people do try to revive the older posts rather than duplicate if they can find the earlier one.
New people often revive old topics because they hadn't noticed the dates, but that works quite well at times and occasionally reveals some interesting changes of heart after a bit of computer dating has happened and the same people are still around.
