Ok, so I'm enjoying the forums, but have signed up to a couple of groups but then what happens? do they do anything in fact?

yeah its really just a way of finding people with the same interests and things. anyone can set up a group for even the most unusual interest. i.e. i set one up for the tv comedy Alan Partridge

oooooooooohhhh like it! Could even get people to wear weird things as initiation - you could have so much fun. I do have a naughty humour, like the time at work when the desks were being moved, so I left the plan on the photocopier without one of my team's desk not on it! it was such fun to watch his agony... Especially as plan said confidential....TeeHEE
