I am one for the more quirky films, small budget but a real story.... you can keep ya King Kongs and special effects happy rubbish.
Can anyone recommend some films.....i shall start with a couple.

1. Dead mans shoes
2. Donnie Darko
3. Baise Moi (not just for the dirty bits...its a good story)

I guess the obvious ones are - Clerks, Kevin Smiths' first movie, El Mariachi, Robert Rodriguez's first movie & Napoleon Dynamite, others that fall into the quirky story based catagory are, Igby Goes Down, with Keiran Culkin (Mcauley's little brother) which is kinda like Ferris Buellers Day Off - Times 10, Requiem For A Dream, which is the movie Darren Aronofsky made after Pi. A lesser known film that is also really quirky and completely off the wall is The Shape of Things, which is really worth a look. But if you enjoy off the wall dialogue based movies those are all worth checking out, ooh and American Splendour too, the movie based on the Harvey Pekar graphic novels, I hope thats enough to get you started Smile

They look interesting! I've seen Donnie Darko several times, so I'll check out the others.

I think these are worth watching:

* Easy Rider (a lot of male bonding, very funny and very tragic)
* Withnail and I (just plain funny with a tinge of sadness)
* Sex and Lucia (A Spanish film - sexy and arty at the same time. It's very
engaging)
* Stir of Echoes (Scary as hell, with a great soundtrack. Kevin Bacon at his
pop-eyed best)

The secretary - I'm not usually known for my liking of love stories...

I didn't like Donnie Darko. It was trying too hard to be a clever film. Clever films shouldn't have to try, they should just happen.

I'd recommend so many films it'd be impossible to pick one particular one out from the crowd. Off the top of my head - Enemy at the Gates. Superb war film, terrible accents on behalf of the cast, which can be completely overlooked with magnificent direction, set-pieces and excellent ensemble. It's in the same vein as Saving Private Ryan.

It's a little Bruckheimer for some people's tastes, but it's just mainstream enough for people to enjoy.

Yeah, I have that on DVD. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. Then again, I think it was expecting it to be a little more sexual, I know that's sad - but the first couple of times when he dominated her, there was this amazing sexual tension. Then it turns into a love story, which is fine. But not quite what I was expecting from a film that apparently mainstreamed BDSM

Hmm, I think the whole point is that the film portays the journey of characters - recognising themselves (their needs) and moving to a position to actualise what they want to be.

You could look at 'Bound' as a film film that 'mainstreamed' lesbianism (so some of my female friends tell me). Each film has taken subject matter that was previously 'taboo' and treating it in a manner that is consider acceptable by a film company so that they can make a return on the film.

I think the thing that made the secretary acceptable was that the relationship (like most) started full of sexual tension and then it changed in nature as the characters recognised that they were not taking from each other but sharing in something that was core to their being.

Yeah, see that was what I didn't like about the film. It had a pretty deep sub-meaning.

If the majority of the film had been as exhilerating as the few minutes leading up to her getting her first bad marks for her typing, I wouldn't be complaining. I think I found the storytelling style was too low-brow indie-virgin-suicides style, as opposed to some more solid storytelling.

It didn't, to me, make me want to watch it immediately again afterwards.

So you would have just prefered to stick with the domination without moving the film further? I think you need and 18R film for that kind of thing.

Equally I liked virgin suicides because it left the story open...

Hmm, how did you find 9 Songs (I assume you have seen it) would you think it worth recomending?

Other than that, if you are interested in 'mainstream' S&M then you want to check out David Cronenberg's Videodrome.

Straw Dogs - some people find it a little disturbing.... and it is.

The Whicker Man - a bit silly in places but still pretty creepy and unusal.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - a superb film that makes you realise what a great thing it is to be able to love somone.

If i had to pick one then probably eternal sunshine - it makes me feel alive.

Actually Paul, if you're fond of Quirky films - I'd recommend Being John Malkovich.
