Home >> Films & Movies >> Pleasantsville the film that missed its own point.
28.12.2007, 21:30 quote
By the way a few years ago there was a wonderfull film called Plesantsville about a very boring fictional 1950s style soap opera which is shown in the late 1990s and in which two teenagers a boy and girl enter and start to change the place making it more lively. In effect sparking a cultural revolution that rocks conservative small town America.
It was a great film but it seemed to miss its own point. That point was that there was a real cultural revolution in the mid 1950s that rocked all of America including its consevative small towns. That cultural revolution was rock'n'roll. Or at least that was what was blamed for it. Really it was a combination of things, increasing youth wealth, rock'n'roll, new inventions like television that helped to spread ideas, growing properity in general due to economic recovery after the second world war.
But those in authority blame things like the massive increase in junvile deliquency on rock'n'roll. But anyway America and the rest of the western world under went a sort of cultural revolution in the mid to late 1950s. Suddenly it was cool to rebel and rellion for its own sake was sort by the western worlds youth.
I would recommend you search out that film "pleasantsville" and watch it with some old rock'n'roll music in the background to set the atomosphere.

I've got that on video and watched it several times. Apart from being quite funny, the only 'serious point' I detected was that it's all black and white and 'color' is not allowed - hence you have signs saying "no coloreds allowed" etc. - so I thought it was having a pop at 50's America's Anti-Non-Whites attitudes?

I'd have to disagree, the film if i remeber correctly starred toby mcguire (spiderman) and had some very uplifiting and important messages to it.
One there was the pop at the 1950's racisim aspect as mentioned above, but this was handled in a very mature and sensible manner making it accesible to todays youth through the use of a tee vee program. As lets behonest who hasnt wanted to escape sometimes done the tube into telly land?? I know I have when watching samantha get it on in sex and the city...lol.
There was also the message of being able to take risks in life and following your dreams, as when the coffee shop owner shows toby his paintings and toby convinces him to paint in colour. Afraid at first but willing to folow his dreams he goes and paints his shop in colour.
This film was in the wake of the "Truman Show", and seemed to fit this idea that film makers had at the time which was a look at the media(specifically tee vee) and its influences.
A intelligent, funny and well done film which adresses a number of points in a non condescending way.
Well that my opinion anyway.

My view on the film was:
Tobey Maguire and friend did indeed start a cultural revolution to brighten things up but also dealt with institutional racism in a convoluted way, which I thought worked rather well.
