Ok I am producing an article for a popular movie magazine, and am looking for a bit of help.
It is the a-z of movies that got a raw deal.
basically I am looking for some movies that you guys and girls think got a hard time with the press from the mid eighties onwards. They must be mainstream movies that most people would have heard of, not art house type stuff.

Dirty Dancing- I saw a "making of" show on it and when first trying to get it on screen, they had a lot of trouble trying to find a production company that would pick it up because of the controversial abortion issue. They finally got Vestron Video to produce it and I'm glad they did- is one of my favorite movies, along with lots of other people.

Another film that comes to mind is United 93- in the states, there was a lot of discussion if the film should have been made so soon after 9-11 and lots of negative opinions about it. I haven't seen it yet, but have heard that its a great movie and I think most of the negative talk about it has subsided

My two cents Very Happy

It did get good reviews, but the press before its debut was bad- saying it was insensitive to make a film that soon to the attack and that the film would negatively impact the families of the people on the flight. I just remember lots of debates going on before its release of politicians and different organizations complaining about it, but it all ended when people actually saw the film and saw it wasn't like that.

Spiderman III got slated, where I am starting to think it is a sleeping masterpiece! The emo Peter Parker bits were genius!

On a more serious note, Steven Spielberg's AI got a rough time. I saw it twice, and felt it was very much akin to a modern 2001, which is quite appropriate as Kubrick was set to direct it.

Enduring Love (writtten by Ian McEwan, starring Daniel 007 Craig, Samantha Morton and Rhys Ifans) totally slipped under the radar when it came out. It's not an arthouse film, it's a very modern British thriller, but it didn't get marketed even though it's fantastic.

V For Vendetta got a panning. It's another very good film. I was vaguely familiar with the graphic novel, but regardless of the source, it's still a good movie.
