Do we agree that traditionally, a sequel will just make a mockery of the original film? With things like The Exorcist, Airplane, Poltergeist, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure... I'm sure the list goes on.... But some sequels were very worthy like Aliens, Die Hard 2, Back to the Future 2, Lord of the Rings 2 Towers, Saw....

Anymore thoughts about this?

I think you are dead right about hit and miss. I doubt there are many people who think Back to the Future was a waste of time, or Alien for that matter. Maybe I'm just being too nosey into what people think are good films or bad films.

The Empire Strikes Back was better than A New Hope but, The Matrix Reloaded was worse than the original??
Cool

Back to the future did a couple of good sequels. also in the 80s i quite liked the first 3 police academy films, after that they were not funny. Also First Blood, Rambo etc.

However, i think the best films are those that are one off, original stories that never get redone or sequelled

John Carpenter's version of "The Thing" is another one that breaks the rule. It's great film.

I actually thought that the re-make of The Stepford Wives was very much better than the original, i normally find the re-makes crap, like the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors.
As for sequels, prequels etc. I dont think I've noticed a bad or disappointing one yet.

Alien was great, Aliens was better.
Robocop was great, Robocop 2 was crap.
Terminator was good, T2: Judgement Day was better.
The Matrix is probably my favourite movie, but both sequels were wastes of space.

It can go either way, but in my opinion, sequels work best when they can stand alone as movies, but continue to tell the same story, not a new one with the same characters.

Jurrasic Park - EXCELLENT!
JP2 - Good.
JP3 - Bad.
JP4 - Please let it be good.

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers was probably the best of the trilogy, in my opinion.
