I may just be getting old, but am I the only one who pines for more cartoon films? Ever since Toy Story came alone it seems every kids’ film has to be computer generated.
I know films like Shrek and the like have made a lot of money, but would they have been any less successful if they were drawn like the old Disney films?

yea its been this way since toy story because it isn't only about characters and their development any more as much as it is now franchise orientated endeavours, with 3D, there is potential for a big market, ranging from toy models in conjunction with the fast food industry to video games.. therefore the industry has ensured that 3D character models are readily recognisable much more so than 2D.. but yea i agree with you tho, the 'authenticity' in 3D can never surpass that of 2D, its like vinyls and mp3s lol

I really miss traditionally animated films, I wish that the big ones were still made.
I do love CGI films, but they should never have been a replacement for traditionally animated films, but rather a new medium.

Hi
Disney are releasing a new 2D 'traditionally' animated film next year - it's called the Princess and the Frog. Everything is done digitally these days anyway whatever the end result.
John Lasseter of Pixar is heading the project though (i think), which is intetesting!
What did any of you think of Beauty and the Beast that combined 3D graphics with traditional animation for the ballroom scene?

Tech will progress and whether people like it or not CGI is taking over animation. It's just a natural progression that they would use what is easiest and more cost effective.
When it all boils down to it, Disney is a business and they will use whatever methods bring in bigger profit margins. It also means no more waits of years between films while teams of animators work on the frame by frame animations. CGI can be done faster and with less people behind the wheels.
Films like Final Fantasy have taken animation to a new level with characters so lifelike, that it's actually hard to tell that they are CGI. This may well be the future of the film industry with actors only being required for voices. Sooner or later, even human voices won't be required. Maybe a 2050 remake of Jaws will be done 100% by CGI and CGV but, by then, you won't even be able to tell the difference.
Just like bbones mentioned with the music industry, Vinyl - Cassette - CD - minidisk - MP3
What came before will eventually die out completely. Such is progress.

Ggi is still drawn though. The storyboards, preparitory conceptual work would look similar to a traditional cell animated movie so it's still there in the background.
This is a stunning traditionaly animated film from a few years ago
