It took me a long time to admit this happened to me, and now I want to warn others - though I am sure it's had enough publicity, it's still happening to alot of people out there.
From around April last year I started to notice that small amounts of money that I could not account for spending started turning up on my bank statements - example:
£3.11 in my local Asda
£4.12 in my local Asda
£5.25 in my local Asda
...........ALL on one day!!!???

It started getting higher sums and more frequent but it didnt really occur to me that my card might have been cloned or something - it was like
£12.99 in macdonalds
£13.50 in burgerking
£36.45 in some fancy restaurant.....again all in one day, or in the same week.

I did at one point mention it in my bank, and I was assured that ALL the transactions were "chip'n'pin" which meant that I myself MUST have made them, they said that the 'chip' can't be copied....you can count my friends on one hand, so I was confused a) I didn't remember going to these places, and b) why on earth would I?
By November last year, my bank account was £1,400 in the red and I had become severely withdrawn and depressed and convinced I was seriously mentally ill.

I even stayed at home for 7 days and just ate dry toast and tap water and *still* that week I apparently spent over £200 in various shops!
I would search my flat, in all the bins and cupboards for clues as to what I had bought, to no avail.
I seriously thought that I was like that guy in Fight Night, with my 'other self' completely ruining my life....
Then last december 3 transactions took place (total nearly £300) at an ATM in Indonesia.........went to the police and they said Yes the Chip can be cloned too!
It seems that this is what happened:

I was paying for something with my debit card at the till, some shyster was sat within 25 yards of the till with a laptop and some trickery that they bought off the internet for £60, and intercepted my transaction electronically......probably sold my details to several people who used it locally...then someone got greedy and took big amounts from an ATM abroad and thats when the jig was up!
Now, this all took place over a period of about 8 months and my bank to this day flatly refused to re-imburse me a single penny that was spent in this country because I cannot prove it was not me.

Those bastards nearly convinced me I'd lost my marbles I was so ashamed and they nearly cost me my sanity, never mind the money!

The trouble is, the law states that it is illegal to copy someone's signature, but it is still the responsibility of the "PIN" owner to guard their PIN....even though they know you can buy some trickery off the internet for £60 to electronically copy the Chip as well as the PIN, the law does not protect you.
It is still down to your bank/card provider;s "good will" if they re-imburse you.

Christmas is coming guys - be warned, be careful.

Yeah, do you know which store robbed your pin number? if so did you tell the store manager and ask for it to be investigated? did the police get told? did they investigate?
I hate banks anyway, all they do is try to keep people in debt, who needs that?

Yeah tell me about it - I ended up paying around £200 in unauthorised overdraft charges - then they offered me a loan to pay it all back!!!!
No I have absolutely no idea which shop/restaurant it happened in, or exactly when.
The usual scam in petrol stations is to use the cctv camera to film the long number across your card and film you entering your PIN number, not the same as chip fraud.
I was told it would be impossible to investigate as there were so many hundreds of other people been scammed too.
For instance, I went to cornwall and while i was there I supposedly spent nearly £80 in a petrol station in central london....AND 70 odd quid in debenhams in leicestershire sameday...? But they said that they did not have the resources to look at cctv cameras etc so the bank just said oh well if you can't prove you were not in leicestershire or london that day we can't re-imburse you.
My bank's fraud dept actually out-and-out accused one of my kids of swiping my card out of my handbag willynilly.
I changed banks and now only ever use cash!
