Perhaps not the best chat up line, but very blunt and forward, I was impressed……

Scene 1:
On a train from St Ives to Plymouth, lady (mid 30’s) heading home to London with her 4 year old daughter. Lady talking on mobile, trying to arrange a dinner party with friends that night, apparently her birthday. From the phone calls I gather she is having a really, really shit day.

Scene 2:
As the train pulls into Plymouth (where I get off) I stop at her table and put a bar of chocolate on the table and say that I hope her birthday gets better and that she gets her dinner party at the restaurant sorted out.

She says: “I don’t really like chocolate, can I have your phone number instead?”

(Always one to oblige, I carry some funky business cards around with me. Of course I did.)

Pick up gurus discourage the use of chatup lines as openers instead suggesting situational or opinion openers. For example you could go up to a woman and say "Excuse me but I need a quick female opinion on something........ Then add something like "Do you think that pink shirts on men look gay?". "Who lies most men or women?". "My best friend has met a new girlfriend and he is still friends with his ex, but his new girl wants him to break all contact, what should he do?" etc.

A situational opener would be different according to which location you met the woman in. It would be a statement about the here and now.

A chat up line that would work for me is "can i buy you drinks all night?" Yep that would do it for me and the bloke could even hold my hair out of the way when I start throwing up 3 hours later...

Best chat up line I ever got was in Leeds by a young as accountant lady, 2001 "Shall I tell you what your doing later ?" I was for once stuck for words, then she snogged me.

By the way although I am not a fan of chatup lines I have used them a couple of times just out of curiousity to see what would happen.

A few months ago in Hyde Park on a busy Sunday afternoon I thought I would try out a chat up line just for fun to see what happened. So I went up to this really good looking woman who was with her friend and said; "Hello there the girl of my dreams". She didn't hear it right at first as she said "what?" so I had to repeat it, then she said turned and looked at me face on not really bothered. I then said "I think you are really pretty". To which she said "well a lot of people tell me that".

Her friend though looked gobsmacked as if she was really surpised at my brazenness in approaching her friends like that.

About 15 years before that though in 1992 I went up to a really good looking woman who was walking through a busy city centre with her friend and said; "Can I take you home with me?", again just to see what happened. That got a really good response as her face lit up with a big smile and she ran forward to her friend saying, "guess what that man said to me".

I should have gone after her and offered her my phone number or asked for hers as from the mood she was in, she looked so ecstatic I am sure I would have got a date. But I had done it on the spur of the moment and wasn't expecting it to work.
