I don't think you can really win. You either find yourself the kind of person that gets loads of attention of the wrong type or very little at all. Each way has its downsides and pitfalls. If you get loads of attention, you might mistake bad stuff for good stuff and do something that turns out nasty. If you don't get much attention you might end up snapping up anything that dares to come along regardless of the consequences.

I've not personally sent any messages and don't see much coming the other way but then I never could actually make an approach with direct intent. I always go for being friends with people on the chance that something might develop which again has its ups and downs.
